Odd character behavior in EverQuest1

Post by Skittleshaman » Sun Jun 05, 2005 5:46 pm

Using my laptop and trying to 2-box EQ1 accounts, I'm having and odd "laglike" problem with the characters. When I open EQ in WinEQ and begin moving a character they will periodically start moving in slow motion. This seems to effect only me, but effects movement and spellcasting increasing the amount of time that both take.

It appears random and very short term, but frequent enough to prohibit playing.

AFTER opening an instance in WinEQ, opening EQ through the regular patcher, the same problem occurs until I delete the eqclient.ini file and restart. Once the eqclient.ini has been regenerated, the problem disappears completely.

I'm absolutely mystified.

I've tried manually adjusting the resolution settings in the .ini file to no avail. I've also checked that vertex shaders are on. I've tinkered with a dozen different confiturations ranging from 800x600 with no new models on, low quality textures etc, to my standard running setup with most models and 1280x780 resolution (I have a widescreen aspect ratio LCD monitor.)

I tried copying all of the settings (with the exception of the resolution) from my desktop which works perfectly with up to 4 instances running at once.

Basically, I'm stumped.

I've updated the video drivers (although the laptop is only a couple of months old) but was afraid to try to update chipset drivers or flash the bios, which is the only other thing I can think of.

Help me Laxi Won Kenobi, you're my only hope!

I think I know what you mean, and I get the same thing on my Intel centrino-based laptop while playing WoW. I'm not really sure what it is, but I think it has to do with the FPS limiting messing with the centrino's head. Basically the laptop is trying to preserve power when its probably not supposed to. So when moving around, it kind of goes super slow but then speeds up way too fast.

Try disabling EQPlayNice, and see if that helps. It can be disabled in the WinEQ 2 general settings for EverQuest. Once disabled, you must restart WinEQ for the change to take place. If the change does not take place you will still see the EQPN indicator and it will still appear in sysinfo.txt.

Let me know if that helps, at least we can narrow it down if nothing else. If it DOES help, then there might be some optimal configuration for EQPlayNice. Perhaps having a high FPS limit but a low rendering limit for the background sessions or something.

also to add, the video processors in laptops dont quite have the juice the desktops have. and I also think the Intel M processors are geared to not be battery hungy and possibly are limited, my laptop has a standard p4 processor, and when I fire up eq on it ALL the cooling fans kick in and kick out the heat like a space heater hehe ( HP pavilion ze5400 ) a friend has a newer toshiba I forget the model totaly chokes on eq and its one of those Intel M chips.
