What is my performance bottleneck?

Post by TheChief » Tue Dec 28, 2004 12:59 pm

Alright, I can reliably three-window on my computer, and can almost 4-window it. I'd like to be able to run four-windows with decent performance, what can I do to make it better?

I've got a 2.17Ghz AthlonXP, 2GB DDR3200, and a Radeon 9700 Pro 128MB.

Will a faster processor, something like an AMD64 3200+ help? Or would getting an extra GB of ram make the difference? What's going to give me the most bang for my performance buck?

2GB should be plenty, unless you're getting system memory low messages. If you go to 3GB, you need to make sure to turn on the Windows XP "3GB switch", or it's not going to help you a lot. If you're taking advantage of EQPlayNice, I'm not sure what would stop you from 4-boxing smoothly. You may need to increase your AGP Aperture Size, or a 256MB video card. Faster processor, faster video card, faster RAM, faster hard drive.. all of the above make some kind of difference, but to guess your bottleneck is a shot in the dark.

My apeture setting is 256MB. It helped when I turned off vertex shaders quite a bit.

What is the Windows XP 3GB switch?
