eqgame.exe crash

Post by hooters » Mon Oct 23, 2006 10:15 pm

Hey! I used Wineq2.0 and never had issues. I quit for about a month and then came back about 2 weeks ago. Ever since I have not been able to get wineq to work. My problem happens when I select a profile from the Everquest section, and when it should bring up EQ it gives me an error that reads:

Code: Select all

eqgame.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

If you were in the middle of soemthing, the iformation you were working on might be lost.

Please tell microsoft about this problem.
We have created an error report that you can sent to us. We will treat this report as confidential and anonymous.
Then you get the option to send an error report or not. I've seen this error with non EQ related things before =/. I have tried uninstalling wineq and reinstalling several times but its always the same.

I don't know how to read that stuff but was just reading some other posts from Lax and he was telling someone he was using way to much ram. I took the above information while I had 2 full things of EQ1 running and a few other programs..so it might show i'm using abunch :).

Have you patched EQ up? Does EQ launch without WinEQ? Do you have the latest DirectX?

Yes, I have been playing EQ with 2 of my accounts without wineq, but its a huge memory hog. I've also patched but i'll go check for any weird ones. I have the latest version of Direct X ( DirectX 9.0c 4.09.0000.0904 ).

I'm kind of stumped, I'll see if I can grab lax on irc and ask him to look at the thread.

Module 24: C:\WINDOWS\system32\interceptor.dll
You appear to have some malware (this one is listed as a Trojan, specifically) on your system. Please scan for viruses and spyware, here's some well-known and free solutions:
Virus: http://free.grisoft.com - AVG Free
Spyware/Adware/etc: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/securit ... fault.mspx - Windows Defender
OR
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html - Spybot Search & Destroy

You should NOT use solutions that are not well known and highly regarded. Some software that calls itself a spyware scanner actually installs malware. Spyware Doctor is an example I can think of that has caused users problems in the past. So, I highly recommend the free solutions above.

(and yes, this will solve your crash on startup issue)

Also, http://housecall.trendmicro.com will do a virus / malware check over the internet. It is another good solution.

I just did a full scan with my Symantec AntiVirus and a full scan with Spybot- Search and Destroy. Both found a few things and were able to get rid of them, with one exception. Spybot told me that one could not be removed because it may still be in use and wanted me to reset and let it rescan on startup. So i did that, and it rescanned and found the same one but then gave me the same message..that i should let it restart my computer and scan again. I do recognize the program, its called Spyhunter..a program i downloaded myself about a month ago because i was told it would get rid of a problem i was having. I had got rid of it shortly after because it didn't work but looks like it did what it was there to do =/.

I am still having the issue...and this seems to be the only one still on my computer. Have a neat trick to get rid of it or any more suggestions? =(

Couple things you can try with a bit of skill.

The easiest thing is probably to reboot into safe mode, navigate to the program's folder and delete it. If interceptor is still in c:\windows\system32, make sure to delete that and intercepthelper.dll too.

Another thing you can do is grab "Hijack This" from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php
It comes in a zip, it's just a single EXE file. You can just run it directly from the zip if you want, and it'll warn you that it can't keep a copy of fixed stuff if you dont unzip it to its own folder, but that's not a big deal usually. You can click the button to do a system scan and save to a log file, which opens in notepad to help you paste it somewhere, such as here, if you need help figuring out what stuff to fix, and what stuff is supposed to be there.

When deleting the selected files, I get the following error.

Code: Select all

Error deleting File or Folder

Cannot delete Interceptor:Access is Denied.

Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.
Will try to run in safe mode and get rid of Spyhunter. Will report back after.

Went into safe mode and was unable to find Spyhunter anywhere. Found its original path but it was no longer there. Also tried to get ride of Interceptor from there and same error.

Got HijacktThis and here is my logfile. I will not touch it until advised. Thanks.
