Boxing issues with WinEQ2.14 with Everquest

Post by EventHorizon » Tue May 08, 2007 1:15 pm

Good day.

Lately I've been experiencing issues with WinEQ2 and Everquest when dual boxing - one window is at 1680x1050 resolution w/all models enabled, and the 2nd is 800x600 with all models enabled - I've been receiving reset device errors when it actually crashes, however, I can usually tell it's going to happen as one (or both) of my sessions suddenly show white textures (ie. for buildings, NPC's, etc) when zoning into a new zone.

Sysinfo.txt is below. I'll test dropping the Luclin models on the 800x600 window (sound is already turned off) to see if it makes any difference for it's memory footprint (the 1680x1050 session carries about 900ish MB of memory space - I'm checking using task manager - while the second clocks in around 500MB. There is 2GB of physical RAM in the machine.

Actually - on this test, the 2nd box (Profile2) is showing all the things I described - white textures, I can't see the world (only objects within it). It's strange.

I'll go try dropping models/etc. :) And I know it's probably something to do with the latest DLL from SOE, those crazy developers.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Lax!

Well, you're right that it's probably something to do with the latest DLL from SOE. WinEQ hasnt been patched in months, so if this just started happening... ;)

So here's the deal. When you start seeing white textures and such, that means that your texture memory has been depleted, and DirectX doesn't have the ability to load the texture that would have been there. The game fills it in with white (World of Warcraft in this situation fills it in with bright green). You get the Reset Device error because the game is trying to reset the display, and DirectX does not have enough physical memory left on the video card to do so.

Basically, the game isn't freeing up some video resources. I don't know what to suggest other than what you're going to try anyway, which is disabling various options in EQ.

I tried with lower amounts of models - it still happened.

Deleted the dx9 graphics .dll and repatched, and haven't had it happen again.

Wierd.

Just to update this Lax - I kept having this, so I ended up always loading up the 2nd account on my laptop (work laptop, so needless to say I have to hide EQ from the work people(s) who scan for non company software (Sony DRM rootkits 4tw) or just run it at home). Not exactly the best way to go about things, bleh. I want to box on my gaming machine, darn it!

After the last patch I tested it out, and boxing is (seemingly) working for me again. Ran through more than a few zones with both running without any more texture issues, so I guess (for me at least) the Sony chipmunks have fixed their inadvertent memory leak somewhere.

We can hope.

Anyhow, thanks!
