Crashing for strange reasons

Post by zohrab » Fri Sep 07, 2007 3:02 pm

Shortly after all the latest patches to Everquest (1), I have been crashing for various reasons. I can load the game up to server select just fine, doing other things while it gets there. After I select my server, if I do anything at all (click the window, tab to IE, touch the keyboard, click the mouse anywhere) that instance of WinEQ will immediately get a (Not Responding) tag in the title bar, and then instantly crash to desktop. This problem also seems to randomly occur during loading after selecting a server and clicking enter world. I have also been having troubles, when I actually can get loaded in, of crashing randomly while playing. Needless to say, this is kind of annoying. Anyone have any walkthroughs on how to avoid this? I have done everything I can think of to no avail so far.

Looks like a video driver problem to me. Your adapter display mode should not be UNKNOWN.

Updated my drivers, got the latest DX files, and still having this problem. When I run sysinfo, I get the same thing with the 3D3FMT_UNKNOWN that I got before I updated.

After searching the site for the 3D3FMT_UNKNOWN string, there are quite a few returns from people who have posted their sysinfo with the same unknown values as mine.

Your mode isnt actually unknown, eqjoe's just getting old. :)
EQ1 no longer uses Direct3D8, you can always expect the D3D8 info to say unknown these days. Your Direct3D9 info is clearly just fine.

But, I don't have anything better to tell you either. You wont find any walkthroughs or anything on how to avoid this, because this is the first time anyone has reported this ;) Are you in SLI mode with those 2 6800 XT's? That might have something to do with it, though I don't know why it would be WinEQ related. Can I assume you've tried without WinEQ and it works just fine?

You should make sure to scan for viruses and spyware just to be sure.
