WinEQ Lite 1.16 - Second Session Issue

Having a (new) issues with 1.16 starting a second session.

Running:

AMD Barton 3200+
GA-N400 Pro2 (nForce2 Chipset)
1GB DDR 3500 Dual Channel
nVidia GeForce FX 5600 Ultra 128 DDR
2GB Virtual Ram (I have the space and got tired of Windows telling me it was increasing the size)

Running EQ at 1600x1200x32bit with full Graphics.

Got the Low Virtual Memory Error (to be expected), but then received:
Another Direct3D device could not be created because there is not enough video memory.
I had no problems (Other than some slight lag in PoK) running 2 sessions with full-bore graphics under 1.10.

As You've requested countless times, here is my WinEQ.log for the session that crashed, but the point of error seems to be with the new RAM Checker code.

To be very honest with you, it's not WinEQ's memory checking code that is preventing you from opening another session.

This error code, D3DERR_OUTOFVIDEOMEMORY is taken directly from DirectX - it's nearly impossible for me to force it otherwise, and it would require hacking up DirectX to change it.

Something I do notice is that the amount of texture memory DirectX is reporting is 600MB, which is an ungodly amount. I wasn't aware that the AGP Aperture Size could be set in any BIOS to be 512MB, but I guess I'm now aware ;)

Now I'll get into what your issue is. You have 128MB of physical RAM on your video card. EverQuest uses up 50-75MB per session of that memory. When it overflows, it starts using physical system memory, as allowed by the AGP Aperture Size in bios. Yours is something like 512MB or higher. Anyway, this is limited by the amount of physical system RAM, which you have 1GB. BIOS is unaware of virtual memory allocated by Windows, and cannot use the virtual memory as texture/video memory. Now.. as I can see by your available system ram (71MB/1023MB), EQ will use that remaining memory like its nothing, and then try to allocate the textures. In other words, that new EQ session is eating into your virtual memory rather than being put in physical memory, because the physical memory is used up. The physical RAM on your video card is also used up, assuming you have full settings on. Texture memory *HAS* to be in physical RAM -- either the system memory, or video memory. You don't have physical RAM left, so DirectX is correctly reporting.. not enough memory.

In order to run another EQ session, you MUST have more system RAM, or reduce your settings. Older versions of WinEQ may have inadvertently caused a lower color depth, or depending on the zone each session was in you may have been able to log them all in and then possibly be missing some textures in game. Either way, with no physical memory left DirectX will not be able to open a new session. Previously, you would have just crashed instead of getting the message indicating the failure.

This is actually the same reason people are getting blue screens/reboots with EQWindows, your system just handled it gracefully.

Actually, My BIOS is set to 512MB for the AGP size *boggle*.

Didn't seem to be missing anything under 1.10, and EQ itself was reporting the 1600x1200x32bit on both sections.. Dunno..

I'll try retrograding and see what happens.

One thing I did notice under 1.10 (which is why I was updated, was the only issue I was finding) was that the Cycle Windows Command would sometimes loop thru all the windows and start back at the beginning, and othertimes it wouldn't.. Was flakey (and a surprise when you went to get that emergency heal off)

Anyway, I apologize for jumping the gun and pointing to your code Lax, I should have known better than to do that and you can thump me for it at the time of your choosing ;c)

I assure you, this problem has nothing to do with 1.10 vs 1.16. 1.10 would have crashed instead. 1.16 is giving you a message explaining the problem.

I downgraded to my last downloaded version (1.00) which is quite functional.

Unfortunately, come next patch, I realize I'm gonna be SOL.

No, I am now having the exact same problems too.

I have used eqwindows for years and had no problems and have been useing WinEQ as of late.

I was having no problems with version 1.10 but as soon as I installed 1.16 I got the whole you do not have enough memory.

I have a Asus 9800XVT with 256mb of video ram and the latest catalyst driver. I have a P4 3.0. I have 1GB of matched memory.

I have never had a problem running multiple sessions until 1.16

WinEQ does not prevent you from loading another session. It relays a message given from DirectX if it fails to load. It will give a warning if you have less than 200MB available system memory when it starts, but does not close the process. Please post WinEQ.log.

Indeed, as I figured. This is the most common "problem" people are reporting, and in fact WinEQ is more gracefully handling it than EQ itself does. EQ would simply CRASH because it didnt have enough video memory. WinEQ is telling you instead of crashing.

You can keep trying to log in, just as you would have if it was crashing without WinEQ. You can try lowering settings, and logging in by entering a zone with low requirements. It may be beneficial to enter the game with a char in nexus, and then immediately log in your other character. What you're doing is getting around the memory requirement for entering the game (this is a DirectX requirement just to create the 3D device), and then you'll just be missing some textures in the game itself.

The bigger problem is that Eryi and Fthis have premium systems which by all accounts, should have no problems running two instances.

Admittedly I have only 512 mb system ram and 64 mb video ram. I have lowered resolution and all graphics options but unfortunately I still can't run 1.16. As of early this week I am still using 1.00 with no instances of crashes.

Just to requote fthis's system spec :

"I have a Asus 9800XVT with 256mb of video ram and the latest catalyst driver. I have a P4 3.0. I have 1GB of matched memory. "

According to the responses I've seen, a minimum system spec greater than the one above is required to run 2 instances of EQ/Wineq.

My system is a 1.4Mhz AMD with a 64Mb Radeon video card and 512 Mb of system memory. I wish to run 2 instances of EQ using Wineq. Is this possible using future versions of Wineq? I currently have all models except woodelf and darkelf (males only) off and horses/elementals on. No spelleffects, no particle effects, no sound, no grass, no names.

I have never had any problems running multiple copies of EQ wineq or eqwindows until version 1.16.

Even having to change my memory down to a slower memory... I'm still able to run 3 WINEQ's...

System Specs, AMD 64 3200+
512 MB PC2100 2X256
Gainward Geforce 256 FX5900XT..

I get the same message you are getting that there is not enough memory to run.. I click ok and it keeps on going... I load it up and I have enough memory by the time it loads in... When I had 2 gigs in I had no trouble running 6 WINEQ's ... But 3 on 512 is dem good ;)

Can you set how much of the memory yer computer uses or it does it by its self?? Example: Should i mess with the virtual memory option in Control panel-system?? or the graphics memory or something or just leave these alone?? I hate when i get that memory errpr also what can i do?
