Crashes when starting EQ1 Underfoot client

I could have sworn this was working at my office, but at home I cannot start the Underfoot client from IS without a crash. Both machines are running Windows 7.

I tried deleting the game config in IS and creating a new one, I tried reinstalling IS.

Does this ring any bells?

Nope, doesn't ring a bell.

Any further info about the crash? There should be a dbg.txt if not also a debug.dmp file in your EQ\logs folder.

If you use ISBoxer, then "Diagnostics for game crashes" from the Help menu can be useful as well.

A whole bunch of texture creation failures. A couple of errors tagged "voice", but I care not whether voice works.

The dump file just mentions an illegal read/write to memory. No call stack. Not sure how I would send it to you, if you wanted it.

To summarize my reports:

Only running Innerspace, no ISBoxer.
This is an older Everquest client, which is running just fine without IS.
The crash occurs before server select. Black window, pause, crash.
Each time I select "Report Error", I get another crash report window.

When I tried launching the client tonight, I had no errors in the dbg.txt

Okay, your Lavish crash report looks familiar, this crash used to be common when that version of EverQuest was current. I'd have to do some digging to find the right info but I believe it may be related to the game's fullscreen/windowed mode setting (and potentially Inner Space's "Force windowed" setting if you have that enabled...). Thanks for looking into this Lax.

Are you sure that the link you provided is the one you intended? Basic multiboxing strategy and a discussion of rotations?

I have tried both settings of "force windowed mode", with identical results. I beat on the redirected copy of eqclient.ini (am using fileredirect in a single folder) without success. I have copied various working eqclient.ini settings, and have diff-ed these ini files.

What gets me is that IS and this client are running fine on two other machines

Sorry no, that was clearly the wrong link.

A quick google for 0x00000044 on isboxer.com turns up some threads about this issue -- granted you're not using ISBoxer, but they might give you ideas. The threads suggest making sure eqclient.ini has the game in windowed mode... Or you could try with ISBoxer because it may change something automatically that fixes it for you.

Lastly, I'm not going to guarantee it works for your version of EQ, because old versions of EverQuest have bugs, some of which are exactly opposite of bugs in the current version. And I've never specifically supported private servers/old versions for any game, thus the ISBoxer.com FAQ entry Will this work on a private server?

Yes, I try to get it working for everyone in every game and hopefully that makes it work, even for old versions of whatever...

Innerspace works fine on this client when using other machines. Something is configured wrong on my end. The windowing settings are the same as used on other machines. I'm not at home right now, or I would check the settings. However eqclient.ini and the IS files are identical.

I've never done much with ISBoxer, as IS does what I need. And it would be some work to reproduce what I have working on ISBoxer. (It is a pity that I never got touchscreens to work, having a tablet with buttons controlling various clients would be an improvement)

I am using this on a research project, and things are as above-board as I can make them. Fair use might apply for educational purposes, but I keep gold accounts active for each client. Since I don't have extra players around to test things, controlling multiple clients via IS is a big help.

This problem is still occurring. IS works fine one one machine. A fresh install of IS on another machine, setup a default profile and *crash* on launch.

I would really like to get this working so that I can use IS at home.

Progress! I copied the entire EQ install from my lab machine to my home machine, and things came up. I must have missed one of the config files when I was copying them over piece by piece.

Is back to crashing again. Had copied files off network drive onto a local drive, updated config to point to local drive.

Am in the process of diffing all of the eqclient.ini files, but not seeing anything unusual. Minor differences in window positions.

A reinstall of DirectX seems to have fixed whatever was broken. Crossing my fingers that that was really it.
