My Failure to Get IS to Launch ANYTHING

Post by rlane187 » Wed Dec 24, 2008 6:43 am

So I just returned from an underway after a month and a half. I booted up the hydra. I have 7 comps. 3 Vista x64, 2 XP, and2 Vista x32. It ran fine on all but my Vista x32. I scanned the forum. First, I tried running as Administrator. Changed nothing. Second, I re-installed DirectX making sure I had the Nov 2008 version. Nothing. Next, I wiped the machine and started from scratch. I used the latest DirectX. Nothing. Since the problem was isolated to my Vista x32 machines I decided to throw Vista x32 out the window and do a complete re-install with XP Professional. Installed everything. Used the link that IS gave me to download the DirectX and STILL NOTHING. What is completely bizarre is that it ran fine on my other two XP machines. Still does not run on the new XP or the other Vista x32. I am out of ideas. Here is my diag:

If you are having problems with just that one system and that system has fresh OS, service pack and DX installs, you have no choice but to consider that something about your hardware is causing problems for IS. Can you swap video from one of the working systems?

Yeah, I tried that. my 2 old XP boxes and this one all have the same video card. I got the 9800GT today to see if maybe a new video card would fix it. Just to try things out I installed everything on a machine I have not used in awhile and again, i get the same "Failed to load..." message. That machine is a Vista x32. I am starting to think that I will never get IS to run on another machine. This are 3 other computers I have around the house I cannot get it to run on. I am going to pull out a newer laptop that I have and see if I can even pull it up on that. Do you think there is a chance that for some reason IS cannot see that I have the correct (latest update) of DirectX running?

If DirectX was the issue, you would get a message when launching the IS main program.

So I just dusted off a laptop that is a month and a half behind in updates from microsoft (Vista x32). I installed the latest updates to DirectX and get the exact same error. That makes 4 machines (3 Vista x32 and 1 XP) it will not run on and 5 (3 vista x64 and 2 XP) that it will. I am really at a loss as to what the smoking gun is here. I have been gone for a month and a half, did Lax put out any new system requirements?

No. The requirements are as they have been. Windows 2000 or later, March 2008 or later update to DirectX 9. If your system didn't meet requirements, you would be informed upon launching the IS main program.

Nothing available in the list will pull up. I just hope I find something soon. My main comp is stressed running my tank and healer. It is amazing how dependent I have become on IS. I really do not care to play without it. With the sample size of computers I have to choose from with different equipment and OS's I figured I would find something by now. The only program they all have in common is my anti-virus. I will pull the next, but given that it runs great on 5 comps and refuses to do anything on 4 others just has me frustrated as hell. Anything past the first 5 computers and it just refuses to do load anything. I am tempted to buy another vista x64 system like the one it is running on already and try it. But probably won't because I do not want to throw a computer out the window.

Well, it was definitely my anti-virus. I just have to figure out the difference between the settings on all the other machines. I have never tweaked the settings. I cannot understand why it is a no go on some machines and not on others. Thanks for the replies. If I pin it down exactly I will post it.

So I pinned the problem down to Symantec Endpoint Protection. Even with every feature completely disabled it still would not run. But when I uninstalled it, IS runs EQ2 fine. I run Norton Antivirus 2008 on the other 5 comps. I should of seen it sooner. Guess I get to buy Norton 2008 for all my comps.

Use AVG or one of the other free virus scanners. The symantec products for 'non-corporate' use are abysmal.
