Please help, problems with directx

so well. everyone knows that inner space requires directx 9.
i had directx 9c on my computer when i downloaded inner space.. so when i try to open inner space it complains about that that i should download&install directx 9c. so i thought that i maybe remember wrong, that i dont really have it. i downloaded&installed it again. tried inner space, still wont work.
i really dont know what to do. i have directx 9c, but it says to me that i need directx9 or newer. so really. what should i do? i have reinstalled directx like thousand times.

Microsoft has taken a funky path recently with DirectX. There are actually several versions of 9c, some newer than others. If you get the full DirectX package from MS, it will install the newest components over top of whatever you already have.

I don't know why they decided to go this route, telling people to get the "October release" instead of just bumping a minor version number...I've seen tons of complaints about it. Go go microsoft.
