Custom resolutions + Tiling

I understand that the tiling is accomplished via scaling, however, I was wondering if tiling would work in conjunction with custom resolutions such that there would be no apparent scaling. For example, If I have a 1280 x 1024 LCD display, could I use a custom resolution of 640 x 512 for each of the four tiles?
