Computer Rebooting

Post by Smix » Sun Feb 26, 2006 2:35 pm

Since the patching of PoR I've been getting occasional system reboots. No messages, it just seems to shutdown and restart and I can't find any issues with anything. I've updated my graphics card drivers and defraged stuff but other than that I'm not sure where to go.

Only place I ever had this problem was if I had 3 characters for any length of time in Dagnor's Cauldron. Now it seems to be no matter what zones they are in, be it seperate or together. I loaded my 3 instances for a couple hours today without WinEQ2 and didn't have any problems (albeit I HATE it) so I was thinking perhaps I could turn here.

Here is a copy of my SysInfo file.

yeah, there is an issue with EQPlayNice, and I'm not sure if it's just REPORTING it wrong, or if it is really messed up.

The only known issue with rebooting (it's actually a BSOD, but many people dont see the blue screen because of Windows settings) is with nvidia cards and having vertex shaders off. But, you fit neither of those criteria. I would be more inclined to make sure all of your system fans are still spinning full speed. While I appreciate that you tested with and without WinEQ 2 and it at least seems fine after however long your tests went without WinEQ 2, I dont see anything particularly special about your system that it should do that to you, and not to others. For that alone, it's hard for me to consider that it's probably WinEQ 2 -- your system specs are common.

So I would definitely check for overheating issues, especially fans that are clogged with dust or otherwise not spinning properly. Also make sure that you have all Windows updates. Hard to say past that, im afraid :(

Thanks for the quick response.

I'll check the system fans and monitor some temps to see if that is doing anything. I'm thinking it's a graphic issue of some sort, but I switched to ATI instead of Invidia because of these issues. I'll let you know what I find out.

I did narrow it down to a graphics card overheater. Seems the fan isn't doing it's job on my x700 and was running close to 80C at idle :(

Ouch. That can do permanent damage even if you replace the fan. :(

Sorry in advance if I sound abrasive here.

There are many thousands of WinEQ 2 sessions launched every day. WinEQ 2.13 has seen more than 1.5 million sessions launched. Some people are guaranteed to have problems, but this has nothing to do with the software, it's simply the way it is. Some people are guaranteed to have problems simply launching Windows. That's not because Windows is broken, it's because computers are made up of hardware with moving parts, hardware with tiny conducive lines etched into wafers, hardware that with too much electricity can ignite. Computers are not invulnerable, and you should not expect them to be.

Anyway, here's the problem. As mentioned in a prior post on this thread, the rebooting is actually most likely a BSOD. You can change the setting so you can see the actual blue screen by going into the System control panel, under Advanced, Startup and Recovery settings. Uncheck the "Automatically restart" box, and the blue screen will stay visible until you manually restart your computer (not: you can write down the STOP ERROR code, driver, etc for use with google). Modern operating systems, such as Windows XP, prevent applications from being able to cause a blue screen. Normal "User mode" applications such as WinEQ 2 simply dont come into direct contact with the hardware, that's the job of "Kernel mode", such as drivers. An application simply cannot crash a modern OS, and if it can, that's a bug in the OS, a bug in drivers, or hardware failure.

Direct3D is another problem. It actually allows an application to perform direct writes to video RAM (no longer possible in DirectX 10, from what I read), which introduces another potential threat. However, WinEQ 2 doesn't use more than a couple features of Direct3D, and the rest is up to EQ.

With that said, I cant possibly imagine why it's crashing your system. I cant even begin to assess the problem without your sysinfo.txt. The first things I would do is check Windows updates, check all your drivers for updates, and make sure your fans are spinning.

Hmmm, both ATI Radeon X or later. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone else who has put 3 characters in Dagnor's to hear whether something happened for them or not. Either way, it's probably going to boil down to a bug in the catalyst drivers; it would help a lot to change your restart setting as described, and write down the stop error next time it happens

Same things been happening to me really, I'm ok using Wineq2 Pro using 1 character, one I'm 2 boxing I either get client crashes or reboots in EverQuest 1, I'll report back anything I find also.

Sounds like you're actually responding to the wrong thing here. Post your sysinfo.txt as well as more detailed information (the crash on this thread is VERY specific) if you want to try to continue the discussion on this thread. Otherwise, your issue is most likely the far older, known issue with EverQuest, as described here:
http://www.lavishsoft.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=862

Turn on vertex shaders, and your problems may disappear.
