Question about WinEQ2 and Zone Alarm

Post by Raahvin » Mon Aug 15, 2005 9:36 am

Why is it Zone Alarm's lights and buzzers went off after one of the latest patches? I do not have an exact log for you, as I have not gone home and tried it myself - a friend emailed me warning me "WinEQ2 has set off Zone Alarms Malicious Activity alarm, and it appears to be logging keyboard and mouse activity".

To a normal person, this would terrify me. But since I read one of the announcements that one of your other products DOES do this, maybe Zone Alarm is just being over protective.

Please advise. I love WinEQ2, and would hate to stop using it out of utter paranoia.

Thanks,
Raah

Ummm well, WinEQ 2 doesn't log keyboard or mouse. The only time it does anything similar is when it is inside the EQ process, and that's to make hotkeys and such for you in the game.

If WinEQ2 is setting it off, then that's fun -- because that's the tray program, and not when it's in the game. The tray program doesnt need to do anything with the mouse and keyboard that Windows doesnt give it.

Let me tell you. Lavish Software is a legitimate business, and we have been for over 1 year now. Thousands of people use WinEQ 2 every day, including people with Zone Alarm, other firewalls and security software. Trust me, if WinEQ 2 was doing something like that, it would have raised a stink long ago.

On that note, I would advise your friend to scan his computer for viruses and spyware. My assumption would be that he has some spyware DLL that loads into every process. This would mean that practically every running program would appear to be "logging keyboard and mouse activity".

well lax, i dont know if you have tested the new zone alarm 6, but it does give a message about WinEQ2 wanting to monitor the keyboard and mouse in wow (in my case), but thats totally understandable, since wineq makes keybindings and right click menu. I offcause dont know how you coded it, but in my mind, it makes perfect sense, and is totally unharmfull.

I haven't. WinEQ does hook into keyboard and mouse for the game session to provide such functionality, and yes is unharmful.

Thanks for the info :)
