having issues with Everquest

Post by Fin » Fri Jul 08, 2005 7:55 pm

I have gone into the options, made sure the path was correct, checked everything, but every time I try to start up the program, nothing happens. EQ doesn't start at all. any ideas? also I'd like to try the paid version as I'm trying to figure out a dual display setup (assuming I get the program working at all) any way I could get a few day trial before I buy?

Well, let's get past this not starting thing first. Basically, on a fresh install of Windows XP updated to Service Pack 2, with a fresh install of EQ and a fresh install of WinEQ 2, it works perfectly. However, add other software including spyware and viruses to the mix, and WinEQ can have a tough time.

First, open the WinEQ 2 folder in explorer, and see if SysInfo.txt exists. If it does, then this might be really easy. Post the contents here, and something might show up. You might even see something obvious yourself. If it does NOT exist, that means that it wasnt able to launch EverQuest. If the path was incorrect, you should get a message - err... just testing that now, it apparently wasnt giving the message.. but... NOW it will, if you restart WinEQ 2 and let it patch itself ;)

If SysInfo.txt isnt there, and you dont get the message (which previously would not appear, but in the current patch as of this posting, will pop up), then it's probably one of a) Windows needs updates, b) Scan for viruses and spyware, c) update video card drivers, and d) make sure DirectX is up to date with version 9.0c

Let me know if this helps

well I've found my problem (sort of) but it's still not solved. I got the message about the path, but I have checked, rechecked, checked again... (you get the point) and the path is correct. Do you think I might need to reinstall EQ to get it working or is there something else I could do?

Well, it's looking for eqgame.exe or everquest.exe, depending on whether you have patching turned on or not. One thing you can try is changing the Patch setting in WinEQ 2 (in the preferences window, under EverQuest, General). See if that helps.

If not, show me exactly what the path message is, and where you have EQ installed, and maybe I can help with that

still no good. message is "WinEQ2 cannot find your game!"

Could not execute D:\Program Files\Sony\Everquest Trilogy\eqgame.exe. Please correct the path.

that's the message and the path is exactly the one that it says in the message. I even tried typing it in the address bar and it started up. any ideas?

Weird. Well, for some reason or another, it cant open eqgame.exe. It needs to be able to open the file to read it, not just execute it. So if you have anything preventing that, it might not work. Anti-virus software maybe conflicting?

Hmm well, I suppose it could be a virus or spyware. If the exe is there, I cant imagine why WinEQ isnt able to load it, really. Have you tried rebooting and such?

Unfortunately, no. I'm out of ideas, without having access to your machine.

still trying to get this working. reinstalled EQ no luck. are either or both windows Service packs required for this to work because I don't have SP2 installed. don't know if that would affect anything. other than that my only other idea is to reinstall windows.

Service Pack 1 bare minimum. Service Pack 2 highly recommended, and if the problem is relating to not having all windows updates, then that's probably one reason why I cant determine the problem ;)

well that might just be my problem. apparently I never got SP1 or 2. I'll try to avoid getting 2, but if it still doesn't work I'll get it. 2 has done some really weird things with my systems before so I try not to install it
