Wineq2 and Dell XPS M170

Post by Ssyan » Sat Oct 21, 2006 11:34 am

Hello,

I am trying to run WinEQ2 on my Dell XPS M170. The issue I am having is the game actually runs slower when WinEQ2 is turned on. I experience pauses in forward motion. It is as if the processor is rendering the game in bursts. Any ideas? WinEQ2 runs just dandy on my desktops.

Thanks in adbace for any ideas

What is happening is Intel SpeedStep is seeing the CPU usage constantly adjust because EQPlayNice (which is enabled in WinEQ 2 by default) is in fact freeing up a fraction of CPU time every frame. SpeedStep attempts to lower your laptop's power usage by lowering your effective CPU speed to match the CPU usage.

The fix? When your laptop is plugged in, set it to the "Always On" power scheme in the Power Options control panel.

Setting that power option is supposed to disable SpeedStep, but it sounds like in your case that it's either not doing that or for whatever reason, the power scheme didnt get set properly. The other way to do it is to reboot into the laptop's BIOS and disable SpeedStep there.
