Memory Usage

Post by Cynosure » Tue Jun 27, 2006 7:58 pm

Hey =)

I just heard about your program..so I ran over as fast as I could to download it! -- I am in need of something like this to play EQ on the new progression servers along with WoW --

Anyways, I was reading around before playing with it and noticed its best to turn the graphics down and all that good stuff. So I did. I loaded WoW, then EQ...then it started to countdown the memory I had left =( I started at like 30 and then went down the 0 and went away.
My computer hadn't frozen or anything like that; but I shut down EQ anyways just to be sure (I am only 17 and spend around 2,600 on this PC last year...I can't afford to lose anything in it =P)

So now onto the question: Will I need to get more RAM? I am currently at 1G and was hoping not to have to spend anymore money in hopes to save for a new PC at the end of this, or the start of next year. But I guess shelling out 100 isnt that bad if I can get this to continue to work nicely.
As I said, it seemed to work fine even for a while after of playing with both running after I had reached 0 on the memory scale.

OH! Would this be any different with the regular verson of WinEQ2? I had planned on buying it to get the tiling so I can run them side by side without having to worry about groups in either dying while im playing the other game, but would like to sort out/understand this memory thing better =P

Thanks!! Sorry for the long, confusing post

The amount of RAM in your system dictates performance. Once you hit 0, parts of the games that are supposed to be in RAM are actually going to be stored on your hard drive, which is for all intents and purposes about a million times slower (and that's not an exaggeration, you can look up average access times on the web). Therefore, you will notice some chugging when the parts that get stored on disk need to be used, but the games will still run. Don't even try surfing the web or anything like that while you have no memory left, though.

So yes, you would want to skimp as much as possible on graphics settings in both games. WinEQ 2 has a feature that can help you do that for EQ1, simply right click ont he game window title bar and select "Get System Info". Scroll down to the bottom of the window that pops up, and there is a header titled "EverQuest", and under it will be some individual settings that you can disable to save some RAM. The numbers are a couple expansions old, but still a pretty good indicator. It's either increase RAM, or decrease usage by killing extra programs, lowering settings, etc :)

The memory difference would be nil between the Lite and Pro versions. No difference.

Thanks =D

I guess I'll just buy a ram stick that will fit into my future motherboard =D so I can put it in this one, then transfer it to the new one later =P

Are the items temporarily stored, or is it a permanent thing? And that kinda makes me think I should move one of them to my second hard drive. My drive is a raptor, but its only 40 gigs and it pretty much full..ive got like half a gig left =P

It is temporary storage. Dont worry about moving things to your second hard drive
