This problem exists for unknown reasons on some systems. Fortunately you can avoid the problem by re-enabling patching in your WinEQ 2 profile.
everquest support for wineq 2.0 was unable to initialize (-16). please try again later.
This is also a rare occurrence -- in fact nobody has reported it to date. This is specifically indicating that WinEQ 2 mostly initialized successfully (contacting and retrieving data from our server), but that WinEQ2-EQ.dll specifically timed out when retrieving data from our server. Generally this type of error will only show up when there is high latency or packet loss between you and our server. You may simply need to try again later, and hope that the problem goes away.

Other than that, there may be other problems with your Windows installation. On a clean install of Windows XP SP2 with the latest drivers, DirectX, etc and WinEQ2 + EverQuest, everything works smoothly. Once other software is installed, perhaps some vulerabilities in web browsers exploited, unwanted adware and spyware installed automatically, etc, things start to get a bit hairy. I see you have McAfee spam killer, do you also have their anti-virus active and up to date? Have you run spyware scans? (I recommend the Microsoft Antispyware program)

I'm also getting the everquest.exe does not exist. That's with patch ON. When I turn off patching, I get "Please run EverQuest.exe". I've got all my windows updates, all my mal-ware removed, McAfee is up to date and runs a clean virus scan. I have even completely deleted WinEQ2.0 from my computer and done a fresh re-install. I've doble and triple checked all my executable paths, and looked to see if there was anything funny lurking around, and nothing seems wrong.

Hepl please

Deleting and reinstalling WinEQ 2 would get the same effect as simply deleting WinEQ-EQ.ini

I assume by saying "everquest.exe does not exist" it gives the full path to the file it's looking for. The error is stating that the file could not be identified as existing, via standard methods. The problem the original poster was having was actually a slightly different issue, but looked the same because the error messages were inaccurate -- the error messages are much clearer now. Anyway, if you can type exactly what the message says the path+filename is, slashes and all, I imagine the problem might show up. If I had to guess, I'd say that maybe the path has slashes with / instead of \, or equally that maybe the path appears as something like c:\program files\everquest\\everquest.exe, instead of c:\program files\everquest\everquest.exe. The solution may simply be to remove the trailing \ from the path, or to fix the slashes so that they are \ instead of /.

I fixed it with a workaround. But would like to correct the original problem if that's possible. It doesn't give a path, just gives the executable it's looking for, "everquest.exe". I took the existing executable file "EQ" and copied the file onto my desktop, renamed the file "everquest", and dumped it back into my D:/EverQuest folder. With patching on, it works just fine, with patching off, I still get the "Please run EverQuest.exe" error message.

SO, it has something to do with the naming of the executable. How it's written in my everquest folder, and how winEQ looks for it. Not sure how to fix with userside meathods..

Thanks for the quick response, Lax.
