General Questions

Post by ozman » Sat May 06, 2006 1:58 pm

Hi folks. Just found out about your product via Google. I have a couple of questions that I didn't see addressed in the Wiki and here...

1. I understand that EQPlaceNice isn't compatible with Test Server. How about WinEQ2? (I only play on Test so this is important to me. )

2. Dual Monitor support. How well does it work? I have been two boxing on two systems for some time and have upgraded my primary system so I can do it on one system instead. Unforunately even with beefy hardware whichever session does not have focus stutters badly. (Even with moderate graphics settings.) If I buy the Pro version what kind of performance can I expect? Smoothness in both windows? Smooth enough that Autofollow will work? I'm only trying to run 2 sessions so whatever limitations I have right now are in software not hardware I think.

My system specs:

DFI Lanparty Ultra-D
X2 4400
2GB DDR RAM
10K SATA HD
1 x 7900GT 256MB w/ LCD monitor
1 x 6800GB 256MB w/ LCD monitor
(obviously the cards are not SLI  )

If your software would get me smooth sessions on both monitors I'd be a very happy camper. Thanks for your time.

1. EQPlayNice requires us to handle each specific patch of EQ1, so the test server isn't supported simply because there are far too many unannounced patches for us to specifically support it consistently. WinEQ 2 does not have anything patch-specific, and will work fine on the test server (you could download WinEQ 2 and run it as a Lite user to see that)

2. It should be roughly the same as if you had 2 on the same monitor.

You can't drag EQ from one to the other because of limitations in DirectX - it would have to move all of the resources from video card A on your system to video card B, and that's simply not supported (by DirectX) without the game specifically destroying and re-generating the resources. Each session of EQ is 3d-accelerated by the card it is assigned to, so if you were to move it between monitors on any system, the performance would be horrible. The limitations you're having right now are probably something related to this -- the windows can be perfectly smooth on your system as long as they are placed on the display of the video adapter that is accelerating them.

Your system can actually run 2 EQ1s on the same card without any issues, on 1 or 2 monitors. Your 2 cards could actually run 4 monitors, provided they both have dual output -- my 7800GT has dual DVI for example. With WinEQ 2 Pro, you would simply create a WinEQ 2 profile to use for the secondary display, and select the Secondary option for the video adapter setting (default is application controlled).

Also, if your video cards have dual outputs, WinEQ may need an update to support that, since you may technically have 4 displays. Run EQ with WinEQ 2 and post sysinfo.txt for me (you can right click on the game window title bar and select Get System Info) if you need further information

Information

Thanks for the quick response. I installed WinEQ2 and that alone seems to have greatly improved my stuttering problem. It's not 100% smooth but it's good enough for Autofollow to work properly. :D

At present I have an LCD plugged into the primary DVI port of each video card (and yes they are both dual DVI). I have 2 EQ directories so that each session can retain its own configuration. I did just realize that even though I had run the options editor for my second session and selected the secondary (6800) adapter - when I run EQ it still shows the 7900 as the adapter driving the session.

So... You're telling me with the Pro version I'll be able to properly run my second session on my second video card for best performance?

Thanks again. Cheers.

This bug comes and goes with EQ. It's unreliable, so that's a big reason to use WinEQ 2's instead

Correct :)
