problems with lag and memory usage

Post by aredhiel » Wed Nov 16, 2005 6:14 pm

ok, i just downloaded eqwin today bc was recommended by a friend for boxing on EQ (running 3 toons on one comp, since the eq application will only let you run two applications at same time on one comp /boggle)

ANYWAY, got the software installed, got profiles set up for each of the three toons i want to box, everything running fine, THEN i actually logged into game and experienced the worst lag i ever have while playing...this is quite odd for me as i am running 4 gigs of ram and lag is not something i have ever had a problem with

so i hit control-alt-delete to take a looksee at what my used memory is......95% O_O!!!!!!.......

b4 installing eqwin, i could open the EQ application 2 diff times (max amount of boxing naturally alloud by the game) be running an mp3 player, multiple net pages, other random programs running.....with my 4 gig of ram, total comp memory usage only ever at around 20 to 25%

NOW with wineq, one toon profile opened = 50% memory used, two profiles = 75% memory used, three profiles = 95-100% memory used and i am getting the little msg about "low memory" flashing on screen :-/

SO, yeah i am just a bit confused about what the deal is here, especially since the people who recommended me this program said it used LESS memory and made boxing easier

system specs: windows XP, 160 gig hard drive, 4 gig ram, pentium4-3.0 ghz processor, radeon x300 video, (pls reply if ya need more system info than this)

so there is my prob, any helpful info would be GREAT bc i do really like your software, just hella confused as to why it is makin my system run so damn slow n chewin up so much memory ;-)

Well, regardless of whether you have 4GB of RAM, your Windows is only recognizing 2GB. 32-bit Windows XP can use 3GB, but you have to enable a special /3GB switch in your boot.ini file, to my knowledge. The full 4GB can only be used by 64-bit Windows.

Each session with your EQ settings is calculated to require about 500MB, just to log into the game. These numbers are actually a bit lower than they should be, as I easily eat 650MB of RAM with one EQ session now.

I really doubt that you could open two EQs and have 20-25% of your RAM in use, unless you play with drastically lower settings without WinEQ.

dont know how/why i would be using drastically less ram in game......i use all the new/updated graphic models and have all my graphical settings set to max......so not sure why i would not be using more ram in normal eq application

but again is there any way to make wineq use less memory?

If you want real-time responses, come on IRC. Otherwise, expect to wait for a response.

You are using that much RAM, without WinEQ.

sorry, dont expect real-time responses, just that it did not seem like you answered my Q the first time is all

so i can can send you pics if you want, but i swear i am currently running 2 EQs, about 4 diff webpages and an mp3 player at this very moment, looking at my taskmanager and it shows a steady line "CPU usage: 31%"

i turn on WinEQ by itself and that number jumps to right around 50%, 2nd profile up to around 70%, 3rd brings it to right around 95% and im gettin memory shortage msgs

is there any way to make wineq run lower?....or am i just out of luck or what?

Okay, given what you just said, I think I see what's going on here.

CPU usage and RAM usage are two completely different things. The CPU Usage % is showing you how many times out of 100 a program is accessing the processor to perform a task. RAM usage is showing you how much out of 2GB RAM is in use. When WinEQ 2 flashes RAM warnings at you in game, it's telling you that you're using it all up, and you will get performance hits from swapping what should be in RAM to the hard drive. This has nothing to do with CPU Usage. You can be using 0% CPU and still be out of RAM, and likewise, you can be using 100% CPU and have all of your RAM free.

So here's what's confusing you. When you run EQ or any other program by itself, it's only ever going to show "50%" CPU usage. Tops. This is because you have an effectively Dual CPU system -- P4 with Hyperthreading adds a virtual CPU. When you have two CPUs, 50% is going to be on CPU 1, and 50% is going to be on CPU 2. If EQ is using all of CPU 1, and nothing is using CPU 2, it's going to show 50% CPU usage. EQ by itself doesnt know that it can use CPU 2 instead because it's not designed to do that. WinEQ 2, on the other hand, IS designed to spread your CPU usage over all available processors. This is improving your performance.

What you need to concentrate on, instead, is your running out of RAM. Forget about the CPU Usage number. In the lower right corner is something that looks similar to this: Commit Charge: 811M / 3429M. I have 2GB of RAM, just like you. This means that I should simply ignore the fact that it says 3429M, and pretend it says about 2000M. If it goes over 2000M (2046 to be exact, according to your sysinfo.txt), any memory past that is being swapped to the hard drive where it is REALLY SLOW to access. My number on the lefti s 811, so I'm using 811MB of RAM currently, out of my 2GB. THAT is the number you need to be paying attention to. THAT is the number that WinEQ is warning you about.

AHHHHH, you are smart smart guy O_O!! /giggles

kk, that makes sense......SO...now i understand that better.....but, is there any way to make wineq run faster?.....any particular part of my comp i could upgrade to help??.......or even settings somewhere in wineq or in the game itself i could tinker with to reduce the lag?

btw, thank you so much for your helping me <3

Absolutely. Lower your EQ graphics settings so you use less RAM per session, and you can run more of them before it slows down :)
