WC3:TFT + WinEQ2 = CD Error?

Post by verahsa » Wed Jun 23, 2010 9:01 am

Hi. A little background information.

I left WoW recently for a break after getting a little tired of it & hating more and more of the information coming out about Cataclysm. My G/F & I decided to go back to EQ2, for pallet cleansing & something different to do. She runs the game normally, fullscreen, and uses an alt-box. I'm, however, more of a windowed/maximized person who likes to have my browser open for easy alt-tabbing. WoW did one thing absolutely irrevocably right that changed how people like me view gaming in general: full screen maximization with the benefit of a 'windowed' application. SC2 does this by default, as well, thankfully. To this day, I know of two ways to force a program to be "full screen" maximized, but it's not worth my effort to learning the programming required to do it (force the game to think the monitor is precisely (x pixels) taller (and sometimes wider) than necessary, and leave the borders; or make the game think it's running full screen anyways). I've done this somewhat successfully with a couple of games, but it's just not worth the hassle, to be honest.

I spent about two hours screwing around with trying to get EQ2 to do the same, and always ended up with an almost maximized EQ2, which irritated the daylights out of me. After numerous searches on google, I found WinEQ2. I downloaded the "lite" version, and it crashed a few times, and searching the forums I found that it didn't like the "streaming" version of EQ2 (dunno why, and is somewhat irritating to be honest). I grabbed the "default" version from station.sony.com, and suddenly WinEQ2 worked... but the maximize portion that is the reason I got it in the first place was part of the Pro version. I figured $10 wasn't a huge issue, although to be frank I'm still kinda annoyed about a subscription for a program that helps me play a subscription based game. :p On the positive side, however, it was $3.33 a month, and it WORKED! (yay!)

I also occasionally play Warcraft 3. Usually, when I play, I'm playing with a friend and talking over skype, so I never cared if it was fullscreen maximized or not (I gave up on trying to get it to function the way I want a long time ago). "Widecraft," a free program to change the game to run so that it shows a non-widescreen view on a widescreen monitor without distortion, was my solution for the longest time, and allows "windowed fullscreen" that functions for the most part, but minimizes the game (the game fooled into thinking it's fullscreen) while still acting like windowed (instantaneous alt-tab, no lag going out of the game or into the game).

I noticed that WinEQ2 supposedly supports WC3, so I tried to launch it, and got a read exception error. I hit ok, and it asked me for the CD. This is odd, as the released version from Blizzard very specifically does not require a CD, at all.

The error I get reads as follows:

Code: Select all

This application has encountered a critical error:

FATAL ERROR!

Program: b:\wc3\war3.exe
Exception: 0xC0000005 (ACCESS_VIOLATION) at 001B:73BA9B40

The instruction at '0x73BA9B40' referenced memory at '0x73BA9B40'.
The memory could not be 'written'.

Press OK to terminate the application.
I hit ok, and it throws up:

Code: Select all

Frozen Throne was unable to locate your CD-ROM drive.
Please make sure your Frozen Throne disc is in your CD-ROM drive, then click on 'Retry'.
Obviously, retry pulls up the same error. I think "Ok, issue with the game." I pop open the game normally, runs fine. I pop it open with widecraft, works fine. I decided to be funny about it, and do the same thing on my Windows 7 x64 home laptop. This portable is fairly new, nothing amazing, but is a clean installation properly patched that I use "mostly" for work. After game installation & winEQ2 installation & directx installation, it runs fine normally, runs fine in widecraft, fails when WinEQ2 attempts to open it with almost the exact same error, it's a 0xC0000005 with slightly different address numbers (0023:69999B40 to be specific). Both systems are fairly up to date (patched & whatnot) with the proper versions of DirectX installed (winEq2 complained about that initially on the laptop). I'm posting the sysinfo.txt of my desktop, as it's the one I'm concerned about, and I have the nagging feeling it's the same problem on both machines.

So: To sum up. WC3 doesn't work when launched by WinEQ2, with the above error. How do I fix this? The only thing I saw in previous posts was a mention of XP SP1, which is quite obviously not the issue here.

Oh, and my apologies for the wall of text: I've also been a firm believer in better to say something and not need to than need to and not say something.

Code: Select all
