WinEQ2 overwriting eqclient.ini and "tricking" pat

Post by jmspiers » Tue Feb 02, 2010 12:50 pm

I'm having a most unusual problem that seems to be related to WinEQ 2.0. The game is EQ1, and my sysinfo.txt is at the end of this problem description.

The issue is this: When I run EQ1 from C:\Program Files\Sony\Everquest\Everquest.exe the game runs fine. I log in, do whatever I want, then log out (I do NOT /exit; I /camp or /camp desktop). However, when I run EQ1 through WinEQ 2.0 the game loads and then shows patch notes from September 2007, and then will not go past the server selection screen (it does not crash, it just does not even show any of the servers).

AFTER this happens, if I try to run Everquest WITHOUT WinEQ 2.0 it initiates a 1.5GB patch download. The best conclusion I can come to is that WinEQ2.0 is modifying some EQ file to make it think that a major patch needs to be downloaded again.

I also discovered that AFTER trying to load the game through WinEQ 2.0 my eqclient.ini file is overwritten to the 2 or 3 line default that you have when you first install the game. The interesting thing about this is that I have my WinEQ2.0 profile set to use an ini file that I've named eqclient_graphics.ini, and that .ini file and the regular eqclient.ini file are both being overwritten. This does not happen if I run the game normally.

I have tried modifying the WinEQ 2.0 profile to use the patcher and to not use the patcher, and I get the same results.

The thing is, I ran WinEQ2.0 for quite a while last year with no trouble at all. Then I stopped playing EQ for a few months and uninstalled the program. I just came back and reinstalled WinEQ2.0, and that's when this problem started (Note that when I reinstalled WinEQ 2.0 I used a fresh download from this site).

I am almost 100% positive that this is a WinEQ2.0 issue because I can run the game as many times as I want, as long as I don't launch it through WinEQ 2.0. But as soon as I try to launch it through WinEQ2.0 I have to download a 1.5GB patch before I can play again.

The next step that I am going to try is uninstalling WinEQ 2.0 and deleting any app data that I can find (to clear the old profiles, etc) and then reinstalling it. I'm hoping that fixes the issue. Either way, I'll post more about it.

Any thoughts as to what could be causing this?

OK, I was able to fix this problem.

First, I let EQ download the 1.5 GB patch.

Then I uninstalled WinEQ2 and deleted the directory. I also searched my comp for any related files that I could find and deleted them too.

After that I rebooted, then installed WinEQ2 again.

That fixed the problem.

My best guess is uninstalling WinEQ2 from the Add/Remove Programs did not remove the old directory and/or settings, and somehow that caused a conflict.
