Can only play single instance of EQ

Post by Takrina » Fri Jan 16, 2009 8:14 pm

After uninstalling and deleting all files in my WinEQ folder, then downloading and installing anew, I'm able to play EverQuest...but only one account/window at a time.

Any hints as to what happens when you launch your second one?

If you play from multiple EQ folders, you can try using one instead. ?

Sorry, I meant to give more information.

I'm playing from a single installation of EQ (one folder), and the second instance appears to load normally until I select the server I want to play on. The loading screen comes up, then poof, the window closes and there's no hint of a second instance of EQ anywhere. I've even checked the processes list and it's just GONE.

Well, from what I can gather on Sony's tech support forums this is an EQ problem, not a WinEQ problem. Whatever the case, it's rare.

And frustrating, as Sony won't intentionally do anything to solve it - their official stance is that multiple sessions on a single computer is 'not supported'. *sigh*

Sorry for not responding earlier -- yeah, their official stance has been exactly that for years. At one point they had an issue where multiple sessions (and only multiple sessions) having a specific setting on with an NVIDIA video card would cause a BSOD. This went on for quite a while, and if it's fixed now, it's probably dumb luck.

I would try shutting down other running programs, check for driver updates, maybe even try changing various EQ graphics options... beyond that I'm not sure on this one. WinEQ 2 really hasn't changed in a long time as far as this goes.

If all else fails, as I've mentioned to a few others recently, Inner Space now has multi-boxing tools that put WinEQ 2 to shame. Since you're a subscriber anyway, you could try it if you want, and perhaps not experience the same problem. The problem that comes to mind that you probably would experience is when going from server select to character select, EQ1 resets the window -- that's something that WinEQ 2 takes care of but Inner Space currently does not (it's an EQ1 thing, other games aren't quite as crazy. Except for LOTRO, which centers the window all the time, which is probably worse). Anyhow, if you want to consider trying it out, you'll want to go here: [[IS:ISBoxer|ISBoxer Toolkit]]

Update: This is still a problem, both in WinEQ and InnerSpace.

Today, I moved the EQClient files (all the ones that had eqclient in the name) and re-patched. The second instance of EQ still went away after loading the server, but at least this time I got an error popup..."Reset Device Failed!" was all it said.

Does this help? And should I post my Sysinfo again?

Inner Space doesn't affect the ability to reset the device. WinEQ might. I would only expect this if your video card was running out of available memory, or with driver problems. Did you check for driver updates? Motherboard and video drivers might be important for this one.

It hadn't occurred to me to check the motherboard drivers. I have my video drivers up to date, though. Thought of that all ready...most recent one is installed.

Update! (Lax, I know you're moving, don't stress over getting back to me...just wanted to post this before I forgot. Make sure you take some time to relax, yes!)

Ok, I copied my EQ directory to a different hard drive and tried to run a session from each installation - one from Drive C: one from Drive E:. Still get the reset device failed error even when not using WinEQ or IS. Double checked my drivers and have the most up-to-date versions. Any other advice?

We're pretty much out of options at this point. A clean install of Windows might be your best bet. You could go 64-bit XP (unless you have software that specifically wont work on 64-bit XP) for added hope that it will do something different, possibly including working correctly ;)

That's what I was afraid you were gonna say. Unfortunately, I live in the wilds of Alaska (no, really) and can't just tromp over to my neighborhood Best Buy and pick up a new copy of Windows. I can't really afford to do that anyway. :(

No need to buy a NEW copy. You should have a license for windows that came with your computer. If you do not have the install CD for it, you can check with your friends to see if they have an install CD or, worst case scenario, call the manufacturer of your system and see if they will ship you one.

I'm thinking more and more that it's a combination of some setting on my computer that hasn't been figured out yet, or just that Sony goes further than preferring NVidia. I think Sony actively hates ATI. Now I'm getting graphics glitches where whole swaths of the geometry go white (or more rarely black) and there's no texture to it at all. I can still see the geometry, it's just eye-searing and usually un-navigable. Alternatively, the text will disappear. No numbers on stacks of items, no chat, blank item examine windows...it's very strange.

This happens whether I'm using WinEQ, Inner Space, Station Launcher, or just plain vanilla EQ.

I'm planning on begging hubby for a video card upgrade. *nod*
