Unable to play Everquest

Post by Takrina » Mon Jan 12, 2009 1:11 pm

I was able to play a single instance of Everquest yesterday with WinEQ, but unable to play a second instance.

Today, I can't even play one instance with WinEQ. I just get the general error from Windows saying that the program has encountered a problem and needs to close (no specifics).

Well, WinEQ hasn't been patched since November 27, so any difference between yesterday and today is entirely on your PC :)

Your sysinfo.txt (thank you for providing it) unfortunately shows nothing out of the ordinary. That means my suggestions fall back to the following:
1. Check for new drivers, particularly video
2. Try shutting down other running programs to see if one might be interfering for some reason. Some anti-virus, anti-spyware or other security products have been known to interfere, for example. Norton Endpoint Security and Spyware Doctor come to mind.
3. If you haven't run spyware and virus scans recently, now would be a good time

I'm wondering if EQ did something overnight that is interacting oddly with WinEQ, because NOTHING else was running when I tried to open my first profile today. Just did a scan too :(

Did every kind of scan I can think of (spyware, viruses, trojans, etc) and nothing came up but one tracking cookie, which I promptly fixed. EQ is still closing itself as soon as I run any profile on WinEQ.

As I stated before, I can run EQ without WinEQ just fine. How do I tell if they changed something on their end?

Uninstalled WinEQ, and deleted every file in the folder, then re-downloaded and installed. Set up my first profile and it's working fine so far.

I hate to say it but I have this problem all the time if I've been running for a while and try to load a new window. Rebooting fixes it. I run no antivirus and no firewall so those can't cause it and I've made absolutely no change. This has been happening for well over 2 years tho. It should've been found and fixed by now.

If you've been running for a while and try to load a new window, the game may not be able to create a new 3D device because the video card may not have the memory available to create the front buffer. Having shut down all the game instances and not being able to launch one is a different story altogether.

This was working last night for me but since the EQ patch today, I can't keep 3 windows going. 2 keep crashing out.

I posted on the IS forum thinking it was that, but it's obviously a WinEQ2 error if other people are having issues. They changed something that's breaking WinEQ. Or maybe it's EQplaynice that's built in.

I can keep three sessions going, log one into game while others are at character select but the moment I try to get a second or third session ingame, they crash with an error.

Bah, didn't realize how old of a post this was... WinEQ is not the culprit. IS is.
