WinEQ not reading 6 Gig's

Post by Snipershot » Wed Sep 24, 2008 5:57 pm

i am a user of Vista i currently have 6 gigs of RAM not sure why WinEQ2 is not reading it when i play Ever Quest. have dubble checked to make sure that it is reading on the PC side (it is) even went to 3dmark to see if their software would pick up the memory and in what slots and it all reads correctly so am sure its just something that has yet to be done.

if it is not a WinEQ2 programing issue would anyone be able to help me figure out why WinEQ2 is not reading it or how to fix it if ya know.

WinEQ 2 does read that a PC has >3GB of RAM, but since you're using the 32-bit version of Windows, only the first 3GB is going to show up. If you want the long explanation, a quick google search turns up this great blog post: http://www.dansdata.com/askdan00015.htm

I don't know what 3dMark is doing to see or read the rest of your RAM, but even if WinEQ 2 were to support it, that wouldn't change the behavior of EverQuest -- 3GB is all any given session of the game will have access to, even on 64-bit Windows.

Either way, WinEQ 2 is not limiting what EverQuest can do, just showing what Windows is reporting as its current free and total RAM.

Weird part is my system show's 6 GB if ram available not only in the Bios but on the operating system as well according to the post the operating system would not register the memory but the bio's would (unless im mistaking what http://www.dansdata.com/askdan00015.htm is saying the operating system wont register the 6 gig's but will register something like 3.9 or less depending on the rest of the system configurations with that being said

Image

so unless the problem is just in the 32 bit operating system wont all of the ram be seen in WinEQ or is there some major part of the link above that i missed some how.

Let's see if I can reiterate what is happening here.

Any 32 bit operating system can only address a total of 4gb of ram. Your computer may see that more then 4gb of ram is there, but that does not mean that it is usable.

Out of that total of 4gb of ram, subtract any resources that may have a memory block allocated to it. Reference the link to Ask Dan, specifically the image of the Device Manager for an example. The system board, the pci bus, the video card . . . EVERYTHING . .. has a memory block allocated to it. So take your 4gb of ram that a 32 bit OS can use and subtract all of those extra memory blocks from it. Then subtract the memory on your video card. Then subtract some more stuff. Keep going.

Eventually, you will end up with some amount of RAM that your particular install of a 32 bit windows can use for windows itself and programs. In your case, that number is 2813MB.

If you want more usable memory then that, you need a 64 bit OS.

EDIT: for clarification

Note that with Vista Ultimate and most other flavors of Vista, assuming your copy is legit, it should have come with both 32-bit and 64-bit installation media, so you could install 64-bit Vista and take advantage of all of your RAM.

Granted, if this was a computer you purchased with Vista already installed, I don't know if it would come with the same things the retail Vista boxes come with.

Lax I do know original box sets of vista came in either 32 bit or 64 bit flavor and was before you got both install media's. However if you have a older original box set check Microsoft's website. There is a section there where you can order the 64 bit media for $10 bucks which is only to cover the shipping and media costs.

If you have a newer version it should of come with both installs.
