Some problems with EQ1

Post by Torborg » Sat Jun 28, 2008 11:55 am

I started playing EQ again while its free. Been about a year since I quit. I completely uninstalled everquest and wineq and reinstalled them before starting up. I'm have 4 issues, I think only the first 2 are related to wineq, but honestly I haven't tested it without wineq running.
1) After playing for a bit one of my 2 accounts black or grey out all textures, the same problem described in this thread. http://www.lavishsoft.com/forum/viewtop ... k+textures
I can turn off advanced lighting and it fixes it, but I can't turn advanced lighting back on with out exiting and restarting EQ.
2) WinEq is not remembering my profiles' username at login, a minor problem but a convenient feature.
3) Occasionally everquest totally locks up, freezes the whole puter and I have to manually power off the puter and reboot. Some nights I can play for hours with np, sometimes it will do it 2 or 3 times in a night. This didn't happen before when i played, tho I have changed a few things on the computer over the year (video card, security software, ect). Also, could this possibly be from a bad hard disk sector?
4) This is a problem I've had with EQ for years, I only seem to get about 20-30 fps, 40 if i'm lucky. I have cable internet running at about 1.3mb/s download speed. My computer hardware should be able to handle it np. Any insight as to why this may be would be appreciated.

1) After playing for a bit one of my 2 accounts black or grey out all textures, the same problem described in this thread. http://www.lavishsoft.com/forum/viewtop ... k+textures
This typically happens if you run out of texture memory. Different games handle this in different ways -- Asheron's Call made everything white, and World of Warcraft makes everything green I think it is (or was it purple?). At any rate, when DirectX starts telling the game it can't load any more textures, something else is put in its place by design. The simplest solution for this sort of problem is to reduce the number or quality of textures you are loading, for example by disabling some of the 29 luclin models that you don't need. If you haven't updated your video card drivers recently, now would be a good time to do that, as that could fix the problem if it is some other bug. Either way, this issue is very unlikely to be caused by WinEQ (which does not load any textures or affect the game loading textures), and you should see the same behavior without it.
2) WinEq is not remembering my profiles' username at login, a minor problem but a convenient feature.
I will look into that. The username is stored in eqlsplayerdata.ini, but WinEQ should be redirecting that to eqlsplayerdata-name of your profile.ini... Unless it's no longer stored there -- bearing in mind the new EQ launcher.
Well, this one's most likely due to damaged hardware, though probably not from a bad hard disk sector. I would be more apt to blame your video card as a general rule. Most commonly, the video card fan -- which is quite small and sometimes too cheap for the video card -- will gather dust, and eventually slow and stop spinning. Then when you're overworking it by playing a 3D game, or in this case, multiple instances of a 3D game, it overheats and problems start occurring, including freezing, graphical artifacts (seemingly random graphical glitches that dont belong, possibly including your textures issue), and of course the dreaded blue screen of death. It could equally be the CPU or other hardware overheating, for the same reason, but the video card is the most common case to my knowledge.
4) This is a problem I've had with EQ for years, I only seem to get about 20-30 fps, 40 if i'm lucky. I have cable internet running at about 1.3mb/s download speed. My computer hardware should be able to handle it np. Any insight as to why this may be would be appreciated.
Don't confuse video FPS (frames per second, aka framerate) with download speed/bandwidth or network latency (counted in ms, milliseconds) -- the two are unrelated. There are many ways to increase your FPS, and the simplest is to trade off certain graphical quality (other than textures -- for example: shadows, antialiasing, lighting, complex sky, and so on) for performance -- the higher the quality, the slower it's going to go because the video card can only work so hard.

Also, don't worry too much about having the highest framerate. The only thing you're getting with extra framerate in EQ1 over ~25-30fps is SLIGHTLY better movement speed, and with diminishing returns. You will notice yourself walking faster than someone else with the exact same gear/buffs because they get lower framerate, but the difference is quite small particularly if both players are getting ~25-30fps or better. Visually there is not much difference to a human -- note that standard DVD playback is anywhere from about 24 to about 30 fps. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD-Video# ... Frame_rate

What you REALLY want as far as framerate goes is a MINIMUM framerate, and 20 is a respectable minimum threshold. Any less than that, and the game starts to feel slow. Such a minimum isn't always attainable though, since the game is dynamic by design and who hasn't noticed that it goes a lot slower when there's a lot of people in a small area. So adjust your graphics settings such that it's pretty hard for you to be in a situation where you're getting under 20 fps, and framerate should not be a problem.

Thanks for the info. couple more questions if ya don't mind. Would 2 sessions of everquest take more than 512mb of texture memory? wineq says I'm only using about 200mb. The Video card is only 2 months old, the fan is working properly. With 2 eq's running and both characters fighting, not idle,(under load) my ambient case temp is 30-35C, cpu 45-50C, and the vid card is 70-78C. The video card is a hotter than I would like it, and I'll buy an aftermarket heatsink and fan, but still 80C shouldn't be enough to screw it up or shut it down (i think?). I have the latest drivers and dxdiag says everything is good. Guess I'll play with it some and see what I can figure out.
