Not enough video RAM.

Post by thomashouseman » Tue Nov 08, 2005 10:55 pm

If I run a single session of EQ for about 30min and then try loading up a 2nd char, I get a message along the lines of "another direct3d device could not be created because there is not enough free video memory "

I have an ATI9600 video card with 128mb of RAM on it.
I run my monitor in 1280x1024x32.

Should I be getting issues like this? If I close EQ down and re-launch two sessions, it works fine and I can log both in, but it's a hassle having to camp.

Setting the video option to 128MB in the BIOS seemed to help, but I still get this error ocassionally even set like that.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,

T.

I could have sworn I responded to this.

Anyway, I will explain a bit about how video RAM, AGP Aperture (in bios), and Texture Memory relate to launching EQ sessions.

1. Video RAM is physical RAM on your video card.
2. AGP Aperture is borrowed system RAM
3. 1 and 2 add together to form 3, Texture Memory

When you launch a session, Direct3D needs to make a copy or two of the screen area it will be rendering to, referred to as buffers (front and/or back). I dont claim to be an expert, but at 1280x1024x32, I would expect it to take that many bits, which turns out to be about 10MB, for each copy. Most of the time, there will be two, so it might take 20MB of video RAM just to launch the game at this resolution and color depth. Furthermore, this 20MB MUST be directly on the video card. If there's not enough memory leftover, you WILL get the error you received.

If EQ is taking up that much texture memory, the ONLY way around it is going to be to launch each session at the same time, rather than launching one after-the-fact. There's no way around that, even if you have increased your AGP Aperture.

Past explaining that, there's not much else I can do to help you, since it's EverQuest using the texture memory and not WinEQ :(
