unable to start eq1

Post by zoycite » Fri Oct 28, 2005 6:58 am

After the patch I am unable to get WinEQ 2.0 to start everquest. I've tried just about everything, restarting the software, restarting my computer, re-installing WinEQ, nothing seems to work. I get the following error (the 2nd memory address varies sometimes)

eqgame.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x715cec0c" referenced memory at "0xc047430c". The memory address could not be "written"

Click OK to terminate the program
Click CANCEL to debug the program

Getting same issue here, but the fix the previous poster found does nothing for me. I am also downloading WinEQ2.dat every time I reload WinEQ2.

I tried a fresh install, I tried going with fresh .ini files, I tried copying my .ini files (both eqclient.ini AND my .ini files from my WinEQ2 folder) from my other machine (which works fine with WinEQ2 and latest patch).

Oh, and I can't post WinEQ.log or SysInfo.txt because it isn't getting far enough to generate those from what I can tell :?

But game = eq1 (eqlive) and I can log into game np at all using regular client (though I don't want to :P )

Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help :x I know this probably doesn't give near enough information to find the problem.

WinEQ2.dat is the patch information, thats how WinEQ 2 determines if you need to download more files. You will always download it every time you start WinEQ 2.

Try patching EverQuest manually; they put out an actual patch after the patch, so if you havent patched the patch, you should patch. ;)

If that doesnt help.. well... uhhh... I'm not sure yet. Do you have patching enabled through WinEQ?

I'll see if I can find anything with that information. Get me sysinfo.txt from the WinEQ 2 folder if you can

Voodoo 5, wow. I cant help but think that must be part of the problem, since the error information you have provided indicates that the problem is in EQGraphicsDX9.dll (the EQ Direct3D 9 engine) and unfortunately I dont think one is going to show up at my doorstep to test with anytime soon. It's not officially supported by EverQuest, either. My guess is it has very limited support for Windowed modes, and this is why you would be able to play normally, but not with WinEQ 2.

At this point, I can offer you two alternatives
1) I can refund your subscription since there's no way I can test with or officially support a Voodoo 5 card (particularly when they are not in production and 3dfx is gone)
2) You can install a video card from either ATI or NVIDIA, both of which still exist and support their hardware :)

Obviously not optimal, and I would love to know what changes to make to my software to make it work for you, but that requires me having a Voodoo 5 and I dont see that happening, nor am I really willing to find one on ebay when you can get a cheap current- or recent-generation card that works better than the voodoo 5 :(

I would appreciate any suggestions on what model card I should buy. I have looked and I just don't know which would work best for me.

Well, there's 3 basic decisions to be made in a video card purchase.
1. Cost range - cheap? mid? high? cost-performance ratio?
2. ATI or NVIDIA? Both are good, and you'll find just as many fanboys of each
3. Generation? This kind of ties into cost as well. Current-generation cards are more expensive because you're paying a premium to use the technology right now instead of waiting until they put out the next generation. Presently I see nothing wrong with going 1 or 2 generations back, but this will change with Windows Vista and DirectX 10 (or whatever they call it if not DirectX). Basically, all current-generation cards would have to be replaced to support the latest and greatest DX10 features, not just the older ones. There are still cards from previous generations that dont fully implement DX9 features, that are still considered decent.

Additionally, you must be aware of the limitations of your computer's motherboard. If your motherboard does not have an AGP slot, you will have to use a PCI card. PCI-Express (PCI-E for short) is different from PCI and is newer than AGP. Motherboards that have an AGP slot do not have a PCI-E slot (some may, but none that I've seen).

Personally, I like NVIDIA. No real reason behind it other than I own mostly NVIDIA cards, though I do have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro and it served me well.

For NVIDIA, here's my rundown
GeForce 4 series: GF4 Ti 4200 is good and cheap (avoid any "MX" cards), but this generation is no longer available on newegg.com for example
GeForce 5 (also known as FX) series: avoid this series, but if you must, you can get a FX 5700 for roughly $60. The "MX" lettering for the cheapo versions is changed to simply having lower numbers. A FX 5200 is roughly equivalent to having a GeForce 4 MX in the GF5 generation, and this system continues in the newer generations
GeForce 6 series: Dont get a 6200 if you can avoid it, but those can be had for about the same $ as a 5700. 6600 can be had for about $100, and 6800 is the high end of this series. Special names like GT and LE may add some special features to the card
GeForce 7 series: 7800GT and 7800GTX is all I see at the moment. $360 minimum. I would recommend going with the GeForce 6 series unless you want to pay the premium mentioned for the current technology

For ATI, I'm slightly less familiar, but I'll give it a shot
Radeon 9 series: Radeon 9600 pro is the bare minimum, which can be had for around $70. 9800 pro is a better card, but a little higher priced.
Radeon X series: My knowledge actually ends here. But, higher number model = better card.

Personally if I simply needed a video card and wanted a good price/performance ratio, mid-range.. I'd probably go with a GeForce 6600, or about an X700 on the ATI side.

My marketing specs for my PC model indicate it has an AGP slot. The 6600 cards look like they would fit but they say 8x AGP and such. CAn you fill me in on this?

I have been out of the computer tech for awhile now so thanks for the refreasher course and sorry for the questions.

I found a page at http://millertech.com/agp.htm#AGP%20Connector%20Chart

The pictures I see I have a universal slot.

Lax,

Thanks for the help. I found an ATI 9600 Pro I could both afford and that would work in my PC. My comp is old. That an 1gig ram seems to do the trick. thanks again for the help.

Just one quick question. I have the latest drivers loaded for the card but EQ keeps giving me a message that indicates I should downgrade the driver to ver 6.14.10.6512. I have ver 8.xxxxx.

Should I downgrade or not. I know this doesn't have to do with wineq 2.0 exactly but I thought if anyone would know you would :).

No problem, glad you found something suitable. 9600 Pro should be pretty reliable for you for another year or two as well

Well, the latest drivers for your card are actually distributed as ATI Catalyst version 5.11 and are new as of Friday, November 11, 2005, and are available here: https://support.ati.com/ics/support/KBA ... tionID=640

The numbers shown by EQ, and in WinEQ 2's sysinfo.txt are the driver version identifier numbers, which are different from the package release version number. I dont know the driver version identifier numbers for the 5.11 catalysts, but you should be using them regardless.
