EVerquest 1 problem/question

Post by switchxfactor » Thu Feb 17, 2005 3:09 pm

Hi, I'm not having any problem running EQ or anything since I purchased Pro this afternoon, but I do have a concern.

I can run EQ just fine the the winEQ2 Pro, but the problem is, i'm getting like 5 FPS and the game is running like absolute shit. Which is odd, since yesterday I was running 2 accounts at the same time with out pro, just 2 windowed accounts on the same screen and it was MUCH better then me trying it now with pro and having the tiles and such. Is there a setting that I need to mess around with? I tried adjusting resolutions etc. nothing made it better, I have a total of like 5-6 models on, vah shir, my 2 characters, and horses/elementals. I have 1024 RAM, so I'm not too sure that that is the problem, altho when I tried running 1 character on each monitor (I run dual monitors) it said I had about 10-25 RAM left... which was hard for me to believe that is why it is running bad, cuz it was the same even w/ only 1 character running. Like I said before... I was running both characters yesterday, totally smooth. now I get like 4-5 FPS and its trash... whats wrong? :(

Also... I saw that there are resolutions added to be able to run 2 accounts on 1 screen, split screened like an xbox/ps2 game, and that is how I would prefer to run EQ, with both characters on 1 screen, split virtically, or horizontal. But I am not sure how to set that up, or if you can with tiles? that would be hella tight if you could help me set that up, or let me know if its not possible or whatever.

Thanks a TON for your help.

reguarding the last paragraph... I'm talking about tiles with only 2 instead of 4. just split instead of quad.

I'm not absolutely sure on this, but it SOUNDS like you are simply not introduced to the "Rendering Limiting" feature of EQPlayNice Pro. This gives the appearance of background sessions getting very low FPS, when they are actually running much faster than they were in the foreground, and using less CPU in the meantime. Without this feature enabled, people will report such things as having problems auto-following, etc. You ARE able to disable rendering limiting, through the EQPlayNice settings in the WinEQ 2 preferences window. It is recommended that you keep default settings for EQPlayNice, but some people prefer full motion video on all windows and accept that they lose some benefits.

It's unclear from your description whether this is the case, or if you are having trouble on the foreground window as well.

To use a split-screen resolution, simply select it from the in-game list. Hit Alt+O, click the Display tab, and click "Video Modes". Then find the two resolutions that have one dimension that is half of the normal size, such as 640x1024 or 1280x512. You must be running windows at 1280x1024 or larger, because EQ hides resolutions that have a dimension smaller than 512 from its list.

If you need further help, please post the contents of SysInfo.txt. You can get this easily by shift+right clicking in the game window and selecting "Generate System Info"

thanks for the quick responce...

I wanna try out the rendering limiting thing, see if I can turn it off, or lower it, I see it under the EQPlayNice options, but which option should I change it to, and what would you reccomend? I'm pretty sure I understand what it does, but have no clue what I should change to give me better FPS. I am not a huge sticler on having all models on and the game looking as good as possible, but I do want the gameplay to be smooth if possible.

Really, you should just turn it on or off. If you want to play with the number itself, you can play with it and see what happens while you play. The lower the number, the more the game world updates and the more CPU you use, but it is closer to full motion video. The UI will seem to "flicker" each update, unless the number is 1 (which is why it's set to 1 for foreground). The number by default is 30, which matches the Max FPS of background sessions. This means that the flicker will be every 30 frames, and since the background is set to 30 fps it will flicker about once per second. If the number was 15, it would flicker twice per second, and if the number was 60 it would flicker every 2 seconds.

hmm... I feel like a retard for not knowing how to work this, but I guess i'm the only person I know who has a clue how to do this, and you are the only person I can ask for help. anyway...

I found the resolutions in game, and have it set to 640x1024, but its not making the screen tiled into the half of my screen, just the top quarter. This is prolly another option I can fix, but I have no idea where it is.

Ah. If you want it in quarters, you need to use tiling or the resolution that is equal to 1/4 of your screen. I thought you wanted the screen split two ways.

The off switch is .. oh. If you want to turn it off, set the number 1 ;)

yeah... i do want it split 2 ways... I want it split 2 ways in tile mode (if possible). but it is keeping the game screen only in the top left quarter of my screen after I set the resolution to 640x1024, and not making it expand into the 1/2 of my screen I set the resolution to.

Ok. What you want to do is turn off tiling, and use a custom preset along with that in-game resolution. You can set the preset up like this:
Image

Then in your Profile, you can set "Default Preset" to Borderless.

You can also use the "Toggle border" hotkey, which is Ctrl+= by default, instead of making a preset, or to toggle the border for moving the window, etc.

You can make a second profile and a second preset in order to automatically have one on the left and one on the right. Make another borderless preset with the X coordinate set to 640, and Y at 0, and it will be on the right half of your screen.

ok... I got the split screen thing down now, thanks so much for the help on that.

but :(

i'm still totally clueless on the framerate or fps issue. I'm assuming the setting you told me to set to 1 is the option under Foreground, "Rendering Limit." This was already set at 1... so I must be interpreting this wrong lol.
or do I just not have enough RAM? It just seems weird to me that running 1 session of EQ is giving me bad framerate when I use winEQ2, but regular EQ runs like a charm, and I even turned all my models and options off. (as opposed to when I regularly ran EQ w/o winEQ2 I had them all on.)

I guess the only way to describe my problem is to tell you I am running on average 4 FPS on EQ in a low populated zone with pretty low textures I would guess (nothing like OoW), Plane of Tranquility. Normally when I run EQ I never have that bad of framerate... ever.

This goes back to my confusion earlier.
It's unclear from your description whether this is the case, or if you are having trouble on the foreground window as well.
If we're talking low fps on the background window, that is when rendering limiting comes into play. If we're talking low fps on the foreground window, then that's not it.

I see your module list contains NVIEW, and you appear to be using dual monitors. If so, you should be using Windows XP's built in dual monitor support rather than having the nvidia desktop manager handle it. For some reason, using NVIDIA's seems to cause low framerate issues.

It is bad FPS in the forground. Background doesnt matter to me, since its not in use, and cutting the BG fps is cool with me, but I'm getting only a couple FPS in my active window also.

I disabled my second monitor completely, and didnt really notice a change, and also turned off the NView thing. Still nothing, if anything a very small change.

any other ideas? :?

Problem

I get 4 FPS while running one single session of everquest in Fullscreen (emulated) mode. Running any normal session of EQ not in winEQ2 this problem does not occure, its completely smooth.

What I want, is to be able to run two sessions of EQ, with one on each of the two monitors I run on my computer, full screen. Why is it that the framerate goes to shit while in winEQ? I tried completely unplugging and getting rid of my second monitor and NView, and it did nothing. I understand the background FPS limiter deal pretty well, but i'm not worries about background FPS, I am worried about foreground. I am also getting a little bit annoyed I cant just run a session of EQ through winEQ without this crap framereate issue. I paid 10 bucks for this, and all it did is get worse. [/u][/b]

oh wow... I just found out something pretty interesting... I ran my second characters profile that is set to run in the secondary monitor, and it runs smooth, minimum of 10 FPS, which is much better then when its running on my main monitor... hopefully this helps in finding out what is wrong.

Still no idea why it gets bad FPS in my primary monitor.
