EQ1 Multi-Window Crashing with 2.04

Post by Coach3K » Sun Nov 21, 2004 2:38 pm

Yes, me again. :)

Haven't actually been able to get any use out of WinEQ yet...crash problems are driving me nuts.

In testing (didn't need to play 2 chars during the lifetime of 2.03) of 2.03, I was able to keep 2 windows up consistently as long as I alternated windows with Alt+Tab.

With the release of 2.04, I'm basically unable to play. I get my Main window open fine and can zone, play, etc. fine. When I start to open Window 2, though, the main window crashes (the crash version where it asks if you want to send information, "Yes/No", not the "Encountered an error and needs to close" one).

It happens anywhere from when I choose the server on server select screen on 2nd window, to when the character loads in. When I switch back to Main Window, the screen is black and I get the crash.

It happened 6 out of 8 tries (was trying to see if different variables caused it). The 2 where I didn't crash, I didn't try zoning or anything...I just switched back and forth between windows and one of them crashed.

That's not consistent enough to go play and count on healing/slowing from one of the boxes. I'll be begging for rezzes every time I try to 2-box.

One of the times I tested it, I disabled Norton antivirus in the background, and it still crashed, so it doesn't seem like that's the issue. 2.03 had me excited to box on Sunday...not sure if any core things were changed with 2.04 to make such a difference.

Anyway, here's my info again, plus the module info:

There were literally no changes to the EQ plugin between 2.03 and 2.04. If I could get it to crash, I could easily fix this issue ;) I switched quickly, using ctrl+alt+1 and 2 hundreds of times, and could not crash.

Have you tried without Xfire? I just now looked it up and it seems like that might be part of the problem. Let me know. I'm going to download it and see if that changes anything

Definitely Xfire. I cant even load up a first session with it running. I'll see what I can do.

This is going to be a nightmare but I think I can get it to work.

Hmm...Xfire? Not sure what that is and if I ever installed it intentionally. I went through and re-ran SpywareBlaster and SpyBot today to see if that'd help. Haven't tried again yet.

I'll see if I find info on XFire, and if I put it in to support something else. If it's sacrificeable, I'll definitely cut it.

Thanks for that info! I hope that helps a ton.

Looks like it's tied to America's Army. I haven't played that in a while, but I get the urge every once in a while. If XFire is required for that to run at all, I'll probably end up keeping it.

Any thoughts, or you think it can be worked around?

You can find info on Xfire at www.xfire.com. Unfortunately it creates its own DirectInput devices, which causes problems. I have a workaround ready and I will have it up shortly.

Okay, the workaround is up now. Restart WinEQ and let it patch. If the problem continues, it's because your Xfire toucan dll is not named xfire_toucan_10406.dll. I'm unaware of whether they change this filename with new versions of their software or not. If it continues, please try to find your Xfire installation and find me the name of the dll.

Thanks for everything Lax!

Still downloading the latest America's Army patch - going to see if it needs XFire to play at all. If it's an optional thing, I'll go without it entirely.

If not, I'll follow the instructions above.

Thanks again for all your work on this project.

Great job sniffing this one out. I still don't know why I had XFire installed - AA seems to run fine without it. *shrug* It's gone either way, and things work great.

I actually got 3 accounts up and running (my own little stress test) and it ran great without a hitch.

Many thanks again for looking into and fixing this.
