Movement Woes

Post by Cyanu » Tue Feb 08, 2005 8:54 pm

Hi. I'm playing EQ2, and I just started using WinEQ2 Pro.
Tonight I had a troubling problem, in that I suddenly couldn't stop running forward.
I had to hold down my "back" key to keep from running, and if I released it, I would be off and running again.
Actually going backwards was impossible.
It didn't seem to be that my forward key ("W") was stuck... since if I put focus into my chat window, I didn't get any text.
Anyhoo... I camped to character select screen, re-logged in, and STILL had the problem.
So I logged out completely, and started EQ2 without WinEQ, and everything had returned to normal.

I was wondering if anyone has had similar problems?
It'd suck for me if every so often I just charged into battle without any warning.

Next time that happens try hitting your control and alt keys a number of times. Then press the W key once.

This usually fixes it for me.

I get the same behavior with EQ2, in both WinEQ and InnerSpace

Researching on this issue I've made some observations.

Whenever I played EQ1, I was always in first person view. However, with EQ2 and WoW I always use third person view. I dont know why, it just seems more natural for these games. What does that have to do with anything? Well, the only time pressing back stops you from moving when you're moving forward is in first person. This confused me when I started testing after this post, because I couldn't stop moving by pressing back, so I was convinced that aliens were somehow involved ;)

Secondly, if you hold forward or any other key and hit enter or click the chat window, nothing gets typed in the box anyway, so it very well could be a key stuck down.

Third, if W (or E for those of us who prefer a key setup with access to more keys...) is held down, and the chat box is brought up, you stop moving. Same for the up arrow key, but this is NOT true for Numpad 8. If you hold down Numpad 8 and pretend you're not holding it down, you will see exactly the behavior described in Cyanu's post.

My guess is that Numpad 8 is the culprit. If this happens again, try tapping that key and see if I'm right. In the meantime I'll assume this is the case and I'll see if I can find out why it would get stuck.

Thanks for the helpful replies.
I do occasionally swap to using the numpad to navigate... that's probably what happened.
I'll check it out in game.

It is indeed how you describe it Lax, because I use the numpad keys exclusively to move. The problem is that tapping doesn't unstick it. The only luck I had in getting it unstuck was in making the chat input window live, THEN tapping forward and backward keys a few times and pressing enter.

Of course the few times this happened were in pretty bad situations, so my testing was hardly scientific. I'm just now getting a 2nd account going and would really like to be able to use WinEQ/IS so I'll try to do some actual controlled testing later tonight. In particular I'm curious if EQ2's setting to make movement keys interrupt the chat window has something to do with this.

Hmmm if tapping it doesn't solve the problem until after messing with the chat window, I imagine it's NOT related to WinEQ... WinEQ (and IS for that matter) know nothing about the chat window, and keys are handled independently of each other, meaning pressing enter has no bearing on pressing numpad 8 or any other key besides... enter. :) It is probably relevant that the numpad keys are the only ones that will move you with the chat box up. Perhaps this bug should be taken to SOE?

Tested a bit. It IS the numpad 8, and tapping it works to fix it, but sometimes it takes a couple of taps.

Arrow keys don't move you because they're bound to edit the chat window, and there's a setting in the options menu to have them interrupt chat and start moving after a given period of time, which I mentioned above...no bug there.

So is there a fix other than not using numpad 8?

I'm searching for a reason as to why numpad 8 would stick and others wouldnt.. does it stick when doing anything interesting like switching sessions or just randomly?

Also, the potential bug wouldn't be that numpad 8 keeps you moving, but it might be in the numpad handling.

The only time WinEQ's input handling should come into play is when switching windows, and even then it shouldnt be an issue.. Are you sure this doesn't happen at all without WinEQ/IS?
