Two-Boxing

Post by Kilarr » Fri Dec 21, 2007 10:51 am

I recently re-activated my second account for Everquest. I will be boxing them on the same comp/monitor. I'd like to setup profiles to have them running split screen on my 22in widescreen monitor, but am having a terrible time setting this up. If anyone could help me out with this I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

The only way to use true split screen is to use a split-screen resolution from the in-game list (WinEQ 2 adds it to the list for you). Without changing the game resolution, I could technically squish the game and make everything look very short and fat, but I wouldn't exactly expect anyone to be able to play like that or to be able to read the text in the window. Furthermore, the only way to see split-screen resolutions in the in-game list (Alt+O, and go to Video Modes in the video settings; you will NOT find these from the external "options editor" program) is to have a desktop resolution of at least 1024 pixels vertically. So, for example, 1280x1024 should work fine. If you've got something like 1280x800, EQ's not going to show the top/bottom split-screen resolution in the list, because it filters out anything less than 512 pixels in height (or at least, I believe it used to). However, it may show the left/right split-screen resolution, which would be 640x800.

So here's what to look for. WinEQ 2 adds two split-screen resolutions to the in-game list. One of them will be half sized in one direction, the other is half sized in the other direction. So, for example, if you are running 1600x1050 like me, you will find 1600x525 and 800x1050 in the list of resolutions. One of them is full width and half height (in this case 1600x525), which would give you top/bottom. The other is half width and full height (in this case 800x1050), which would give you left/right.

A lot of people initially love the idea of split screen, but then find that they don't want to change the resolution to achieve it, because they like their game UI a certain way. So it's not for everyone, but if you can get past having to fix your UI, I'm sure it would work wonderfully. Once you get the windows in position, you can disable the border on the windows (shift+right click in the game window, or right click on the title bar, and various window customization options are available in the menu WinEQ 2 provides).

I'm running 1680x1050 and was going to run them top/bottom. I went in game and selected 1680x525 in the options, but when I dragged the window to the top half of the screen and let go, the window keeps reverting to full screen. So I don't get a chance to lock it in position. Border is checked and Lock Position is not checked so I'm thinking I should be able to drag and reset the window, but it's not allowing me to. Any ideas?

Any ideas why this isn't working?

My apologies, I started responding but ended up having to head out for family Christmas stuff. WinEQ should not be snapping the window back -- Lock Position will actually prevent you from moving it in the first place.

It sounds like what might be happening is the game is resetting the display and switching between full screen and windowed mode. The game keeps separate resolutions for that, and would probably move the window to its previous "windowed" position when it switches from full screen to windowed mode. Try switching between full screen and windowed modes in the in-game video options, and see if that helps -- you can set the resolution to be the same for both modes. WinEQ used to enforce the same resolution for both (there's an eqclient.ini setting for it) but they changed how the INI files were being used and made that a little more difficult. I can reimplement that though if that turns out to be the issue.

Let me know if this helps
