2ACC EQ play with WinEQ2 went bad since 2007/07/05 patch

Post by Goldrat » Tue Jul 10, 2007 11:25 am

Since patch, my 2acc playing with WinEQ2 became wrong.
At first, disappearing some letter in some window,
then 1acc window goes white and nothing to see.
I relog then could play that day all.
But next day I got 'ResetDevice() failed' error frequently.
So I thought EQ patch problem or WinEQ problem, but there were no particulary case I can found.
I decided to buy new video card. I changeed card then test played.
...Disappearing some lettes in some window again in 3min.
Now I think that was not my video card problem but either EQ or WinEQ
problem related last patch.
Please help thank you.

You could easily rule out WinEQ 2 by launching your EQ sessions without WinEQ 2.

The errors you are describing sound like a hardware problem. You might want to look for driver updates and such as a starting point. Past that, from your description the only thing similar that I can relate this issue to is running out of video memory. EQ does sometimes leak video memory after patches, so could potentially be solved for a few hours of play by rebooting

Thank you but then any sugetion about what kind of hardware?

Post by Goldrat » Wed Jul 11, 2007 4:35 pm

Thank you for your replying.
I thought my video card broken too, so I bought and change card.
But same problem ( letters lost, white charctors in charctor select, Resetdevice() failed error cradhed to desktop)
This happened to me after the patch.
Your suggetion is hardware problem, or EQ program bug.
If hardware, what parts besided video card?
Any suggetion?

Btw I will try to test without EQ2 too.

Thank you.

Yes, I do understand that you tried a new video card. However, I don't know much about your video card. If your GeForce 6200 has 64MB of RAM for example, it could easily be running out of physical RAM on the card and have to use system RAM to cover the remainder. If you run out of physical system RAM and physical video RAM, you will start to see missing graphics.

I have no other suggestions other than what I posted. Driver updates for one (for video and motherboard at the very least, and also BIOS for motherboard), potential EQ memory leaks for two. I'm unaware of any other reason besides bad hardware that you might see the problems you are seeing. It could be anything, including motherboard, video card, CPU, RAM. Missing text is kind of unprecedented. White textures are common, and are a result of running out of texture memory (video RAM + shared system RAM).

July 12 patch, Disconnect to charactor selection every time

Post by Goldrat » Thu Jul 12, 2007 6:18 pm

Thank you for your suggetion.
I saw WinEQ Low system Memory meesage every time for 2years with no problem gaming so older EQ managed the memories well I think.
And I tried without WinEQ and ResetDevice error also happened so was the problem of EQ but not WinEQ I figured out.
But After 12, July patch I cant connect to charactor selection now.
With WinEQ2 I use 2accouts but both of them disconnect before charactor selection.
Without WinEQ2 I can play game. (at least 3mins or so I tested and loggedout normaly.)

Connecting problem was solved.
I made copy of EQ directory for the ResetDivece problem.
And renamed that again then I can connect to charctor select now.
Then sadly ResetDevice appear befor charactor selection for my 2nd window of WinEQ2.
So EQ patch didnt solved my problem...

I can almost guarantee this is a memory issue. Every eq patch has the chance of increasing memory usage and your hardware finally gave up the ghost and said "Enough!".

The low memory warning is there for a early warning indicator of problems like the ones you describe. You should definitely either turn off additional graphics options to lower the amount of RAM you are using, or purchase additional RAM. I can't offer any other suggestions since you pretty much confirmed it is from running out of physical RAM. With a 64MB video card and low system RAM, you're depleting all of your physical RAM and the game simply cannot load additional textures or reset the display (which is when you get ResetDevice errors). Resetting the display REQUIRES available video RAM -- it cannot use the shared system memory that makes up the remainder of the texture memory.

If you want my advice, I would return your brand new video card, and pick one up that has 128MB or more video RAM on it, and I would pick up another 1GB of system RAM (another 512MB system RAM minimum, but I recommend adding 1GB).

I have occasionally seen the reset device error on one of our 8 accounts when the desktop resolution or refresh (I can't remember which but I think there is some discussion in the eq boards) does not match the ingame setting.

The color depth setting is the most important thing. Desktop resolution is actually irrelevant when windowing, unless the desktop resolution is smaller than the in game resolution. Refresh rate should not be an issue, but I suppose that's possible.

Memory related but comes from patch I supposed

Post by Goldrat » Fri Jul 13, 2007 7:30 pm

Thank you for your advice.

My Video card has 128Mb memory and its brand new.
My System Ram is 1Gb and this is the limit of my PC =(

I examined how system memory used in launching WinEQ2 Session today.
(through Task Manager. Watched Process and Perfomance tab)
Before WinEQ2 session Perfomance tabs Physical memory left 700Mb.
I launched WinEQ2 instances.
Loggin in 1 instance and Process tabs 1st eqgame.exe s memory increasing from 89Mb to 480Mb through charactor selection screen displayed.
Then loggin 2nd instance and process tabs 2nd eqgame.exe s memory increasing from 89Mb to 200Mb through charactor selection screen displayed.
Performance tabs physical memory lower then 20Mb st this time. So my 1G memory runs out at 2nd WinEQ2 window drawing charactor selection screen. Then 2nd windows texture loss started. Red yellow white charactors.
Logged in 1st instances charactor and I got white world of PoK.
At this point Task mangers 1st EQgame.exes uses only 119Mb and 2nd uses 90Mb or so. Summary of using memories by all process in the Process tabs was 300Mb .
But Performance tabs physical memory available only 80Mb.
Where gone my memories.
Windows uses 200Mb and 300Mb from other tasks on task manager?
If so I supposed that 500Mb free but Perfomance tabs indicates only 80Mb left.
I wonderd and gazed in the Perfomance tab and I found physical memroy available slowly increasing at rate of 5Mb/5 seconds.
5minutes of so after physical memoryu is 150Mb and still slowly increasing.

Whole story , I suppose that Eqgame.exe still has memory management bug even after July patch.
Before July 05 patch. I could able to open 30more Web Pages for items quests so on informations of EQ gaming and play WinEQ2s 2 instances very well at that same time. (Alt tabbing game and web. That was fast and no stress , sometime I launched outlook and excelsheet on them. and still I could play TBS zones with no problem)

After July 05 patch, I got ResetDevice() failed error from even EQ 1 instance without WinEQ2. (Same with WinEQ2 s 2instacne indeed)
After July 12 patch, I can play EQ 1 instance without WinEQ2 now.
So I think july 05 patch had some memory management bug.
and not completly solved even July 12 patch.
