Memory trouble

Post by Zaxus » Fri Dec 30, 2005 2:24 am

I've used Win EQ 2.0 for a while now to play EQ1. I recently took about 5 months off. When I came back I reactivated my Win EQ 2.0 and started playing. My problem is that it does not seem to be helping keep my memory use down, it's like EQ Playnice isn't working. I have 1 1/4 gigs of ram, when I start EQ I have about 760 free. After starting EQ it drops to about 100 free. My system is exactly the same as it used to be but before when running EQ1 with Win EQ 2.0 I would have 300-450 megs free, I could run 2 accounts with no trouble. I don't know wheteher the problem is in my Win EQ 2.0 or if Sony just has changed EQ to use more memory. I even downloaded a new copy of Win EQ and installed it but no change, I also updated Win XP to SP2 because that was recommended but still no help. Attached is the info text. Any help is greatly appreciated, thx.

EQPlayNice and WinEQ 2 do not decrease the amount of RAM EQ sessions use. EQPlayNice decreases CPU usage, which in turn MAY decrease RAM usage but is not the intended purpose or design.

So about the memory usage. You have about 1280MB of RAM, and sysinfo.txt suggests that you are going to use at least 500MB per session just to launch the game past character select. This number can easily be 600MB after zoning in and walking around.

The bottom line is, if you want to launch two EQs with those settings, you have to start with at least twice that requirement before launching EQ. If you only have 760MB free before launching EQ, you just plain wont be able to run two without performance drops, because you'll drain that RAM to 0.

My suggestion is to tweak the settings listed in your paste that increase the RAM usage
Luclin models: 29 (+145 min RAM)
Sound: ON (+22 min RAM)
Dynamic Lighting: ON (+4 min RAM)
Texture Caching: ON (+0 min RAM)
Texture Quality: MEDIUM (+30 min RAM)
Sky: COMPLEX (+10 min RAM)
Calculated minimum RAM: 494MB (BASE+211MB)
You can drop some of the worthless luclin models, set sky to normal, and drop texture quality to low.

KK, thank you for the prompt response, I misunderstood what EQ playnice did. I'll explore further on what to do because I used to easily "2box" with this system. Something has changed, possibly I have background services running that I didn't used to.

Well, assuming you installed 1 or more EQ expansions to be up to date, that's all that needed to happen to increase the memory requirements of EQ (this actually comes up a lot, people will say "i didnt change anything on my system but since coming back from eq 1 year ago i cant 2 box" or after installing the new expansion they cant even launch the 2nd session because it says not enough video memory, etc). Or you may consider closing some of the 500MB of programs you also have open
