Blank Pause when switching screens

Post by Fallor » Fri Oct 28, 2005 10:39 am

Hi,

I've recently just switched over from using EQ Windows which has now been totally fubared with the latest patch.

Anyway, I'm getting the hang of WinEQ which is a very nice program however when I switch from one game to the other the screen goes black for about a second which is a bit annoying.

I'm not sure why this is happening, though I do know it didnt happen with EQ Windows, I could switch from char to char and the screen would show up instantly.

I have a feeling it might just be some special option to save resources by putting the inactive screen into a sleep mode but is there anyway to stop this pause from happening when switching from screen to screen?

I have this problem as well. I also notice there is about a 1 second lag time before keystrokes are registered; problematic when you need to assist or react quickly.

Any sleeping implemented by WinEQ or EQPlayNice is measured in milliseconds, and would be more to the tune of 0 to 30 milliseconds, rather than anything noticeable. It sounds like maybe something on your system is using a lot of resources, and because of this, ANY sleeping done by WinEQ will allow the other application to take way too much processor time. You can try disabling EQPlayNice in the "EverQuest, General" options in the WinEQ 2 preferences window. Let me know if that changes anything for you, or you can also check the Windows task manager to determine if something else is taking up the CPU time.

I also notice a slight delay when switching instances, which wasnt present in EQW

Albeit VERY small, were talking 0.5 of a second, the screen does go black for a split second before displaying the other instance. This in turn causes slight lag with commands that wasnt present in EQW

Running a P4 2.8ghz HT, 1 gig OCZ ram, sata HD, 9600 pro vid. Never once had the problem with EQW

I can live with it though, seeing as EQW is no longer working I will gladly use this product (had no reason to switch before). BUT if you can figure out the difference between EQW and WinEQ, Lax, I would be more than grateful :)

Purchasing the pro/full version might even be in my future if it was fixed, hint hint :)

Lax, I've posted on this lag/delay situation before, but I've found something interesting which I'll post about.

Having built in EQPN support in WinEQ, does add to this switching delay but it isn't the cause as disabling it still does not give an instant switch like EQW acheived.

What I found was this. There are 3 ways to switch windows.

1) ALT+TAB produces a pretty quick window switch.

2) Pressing the Global Activation key that brings up the corresponding window ie. (CTRL+ALT+1). This is a quicker method than the 3rd option.

3) Using the Switch to next WinEQ window key. This one for some reason seems to make the window switch slower than option #2. I prefer to use this option but have now switched to #2 as it's quicker and I don't experience lag or delay effect so much.

I don't know why it does this. EQW had instant switching both with it's "Next Window" key and also Global Activation key. Even with EQPN running with 1 FPS on the background window, I achieved faster window switching than WinEQ with EQPN disabled. I know why this is the case but hopefully what I posted above will shed some light on this. It seems the program handles the key press of the 2 methods differently.

Okay, I've been chatting with some people in IRC about this issue since it's nothing I've ever seen. From what I'm gathering, this problem may be limited to ATI Radeon 9xxx cards with old drivers. One user explained that he used to have a problem that sounds just like this on one of his systems (radeon 9600) and not another (radeon X600), but after updating drivers, he no longer had this problem.

While I have no idea why this would happen with WinEQ 2 and not WinEQ 1 or even EQWindows, you should definitely try updating your ATI Catalyst drivers and report back whether this solves the problem or not. If not, I will continue to help troubleshoot this problem

I have a combination of ATI CATs 5.7, 5.8, 5.9 and 5.10 on my different systems. From what I can see it doesn't seem a factor. However I am updating them all to 5.10 as the SOE warning window came up saying to update the drivers. My ATI cards are as follows:

9500 Pro
9600 Pro
X800 XT
X800 XT PE

Re-reading what I just posted above, let me clarify something more.

Using Global Activation, window switching will always take the same amount of time. It's a constant and reliable way to switch windows. Using the "Next Window" key however isn't as reliable time wise. It seems if you havn't pressed the "Next Window" key in awhile (like maybe 1min) then pressing it creates a pause/lag while it switches to the next window. Even if I had used ALT+TAB or the GA key beforehand, it has no bearing on the lag caused by the "Next Window" key. However if you keep pressing it continuously or wait a few seconds then press it again, it switches windows just as quick as the GA method. So something slightly odd is happening here which I'm sure is unintended. In short, the "Next Window" key can only be used if you've pressed it in the last few seconds, otherwise a noticeable lag/pause will occur.

I hope what I just wrote can be understood lol. If not I'll try to reword it better for you.

Meh, I can't edit my post. ATI card posted above should be a 9800 XT and not an X800 XT. I do have an X800 XT PE however.

I had the same problem with WinEQ 2.xx (but not 1.38), where, when boxing, switching to the next box would cause not only half a second delay but also any keys pressed within a second or two would affect both the current box and the box that I last switched from. It also made my toons in everquest unable to autofollow; they would just appear to start running then get warped back to their original point. I have ATI Radeon 9800 pro, had this problem both several months ago when trying winEQ 2 and just after the patch (having downloaded the newest drivers at the same time) due to the mouse issue with 1.38.

I was able to fix this by turning off EQPlayNice as instructed earlier in this thread, under wineq2 > options > preferences > everquest > general > set EQPlayNice to off. Since I've done that, switching boxes, whether through alt tab, next/previous, or global activation (I usually use global activation) has been pretty much instant like WinEQ 1. I have no clue why turning off EQPlayNice works, but it does (and it hasn't really been necessary to run it since EQ added the maximum framerate option anyway.)

I'd like to see sysinfo.txt from the folks reporting this problem. This file is generated by WinEQ 2 and stored in the WinEQ 2 folder. If you dont know how to get that, then you can right click on the game window's title bar and select "Generate System Info" and it will open for you

Using a nVidia GeForce PCX 5750. I should clarify about the delay I was talking about earlier. When I switch to the second Everquest game window (I run 2), I see a black screen in the second window for a brief moment. For about 1 second after black screen goes away and the game appears again, keyboard commands aren't accepted.

I'm going to be busy with work for the next few days so I won't have time to play with the WinEQ settings for a while.

I run my pc out of ram probably heh i play 6 characters when i should only play 4 i believe? but that was when i had like 2 regular eq sessions open. Not sure if i dont have this problem without mq2 and yes i use mq2fps, but give me 5 minutes i think that patch fixed it, yay :D not sure though let me test it real quick.

I forgot to mention I use the "Next Window" switching method that EQNET was talking about, assigned to "Num +".
