Low Texture Memory ../CRASH (eq1)

Post by rpger00 » Wed Dec 22, 2004 9:15 am

Running 1-2 instances of EQ1. WinEQ 2.0 - non subscriber

Okay this is really annoying : / I'm getting random "Low texture memory" from anywhere of 30 MB all the way down to 8 and EQ(1) will eventually crash. Just for an idea I'm running on a 2.6 Pentium with HT, 1 gig of pc 3200 ram and a 128 radeon graphics card. I'm getting these memory errors sometimes while just playing one account while running through zones. I'm not positive it's this software, but I get it very often if I run two accounts. I play in 1280x1024 all the time with everything on except for sound. Okay now I normally wouldn't mind this being a problem and I'd turn off some options probably.. But... I just reformatted and prior to doing so I used to run two with full models, 1280x1024 resolution ABSOLUTELY FINE, ALL THE TIME and never had a problem. Now it seems if I just leave my comp & eq on long enough it will eventually crash. I'm not positive if it's with this software or not, but I really have no clue where else I would look.. Any help would be awesome.

Also I had went to options once to turn down some things to try that, and the program that loads options outside of EQ friggin crashed, over and over. Never got it up! Anyways, here's my info, hope it helps.

WinEQ has nothing to do with the texture memory. In fact, neither do most of the EQ settings, including the number of models. See the table in our faq: http://www.lavishsoft.com/?p=faq. The best thing for you to do is increase your AGP Aperture Size in BIOS. http://www.lavishsoft.com/?p=bios

The low texture memory info you're seeing is strictly from information received directly from DirectX. So while that is displayed by WinEQ, WinEQ is not the cause of it ;) My only other suggestion is to make sure you've applied all of the Windows Updates, and have the latest drivers from ATI for your video card

Arighty thanks. Just out of curiosity what would you recommend I set the memory to? Basically only use this computer for EQ / browsing sites.

I generally recommend 256MB for the AGP Aperture Size

bla.

"Error: Another Direct3D device could not be created because there is not enough video memory"

This is after setting the AGP aperture size to 256MB : /

Any other suggestions? Memory just counts down from the second I log on until it just runs out. Of course it's all the more frustrating since I never had a problem like this before reformatting :?

Well, it's not WinEQ.. I dont know what else to tell you. D3D devices can only be created if there's enough physical RAM left on your video card, it can't use the AGP Aperture (because it needs a physical buffer on the video card). Try windows update, newest drivers from ATI (try the omega drivers also), etc. Possibly even a bios update

Textures in EQ

Post by cbdougla » Thu Dec 23, 2004 10:01 pm

I have had some of the same problems and it is definitely not WinEQ. If anything, the information that WinEQ gives can really help out a lot in preventing these issues (see below).

If you get the error about not being able to create a new D3D device, the only thing you can do really is reboot. I've not figured out any other way to fix it.

However, I've noticed that running with medium textures and texture compression does help me when I 2 box on the same computer. I am running an Athlon XP1600+ with a Radeon 9700 Pro (128MB). I have 768 MB of physical RAM.

This worked for me: I turned off quite a few models and turned on medium textures and then ran two windows to see how much RAM and texture RAM it took. Then I set the AGP aperature accordingly. Currently, it's set to 64MB. That is less than the suggested by a lot of folks but it works for me. I do sometimes get low texture messages but I never run out and the extra "normal" RAM helps keep the computer from paging so much. However, it does still page. Get used to it unless you're running 1GB+ of RAM. Still, once both characters are in the zone, you'll find things run pretty well.

Face it. Running two copies of EQ on one system is more stress than most systems are set up for. However, a little tweaking and you'll be running well. Even with my slower than average processor, I run quite well two boxing now; even in OOW zones.
