EverQuest 1 ~ Locking up

Post by spoonr79 » Tue Jan 22, 2008 7:34 pm

I'm having an issue where my PC will "freeze" when I play EQ. The only thing I can do is do a hard reboot. The screen just freezes, I can't move the mouse, tab between EQ instances, etc etc. This seems to happen randomly, although it does seem to be more prevalent in certain zones (KT, PoK, HoH, some DoD zones). Some zones, I will never have an issue with, other zones like PoK is almost certain to make it happen.

This is very frustrating!

I'm having the same issue, although control does eventually come back.

After about 5-6 minutes of it happening though, my system BSOD's and reboots. I check the Windows minidump, and it shows that it's my video card going into an endless loop with the nv4_disp driver (using Nvidia Forceware 169.21, latest revision).

I'm going a reformat to see if that helps, but I'm looking at other hardware anyways.

Any freeze/bsod when playing the game is either a) bad drivers or b) bad hardware, and is not likely to be WinEQ related. WinEQ acts in user mode (as opposed to kernel mode) and does not have the ability to bring your system to its knees. The issue you're describing about certain zones could be a bad stick of RAM, a bad video card (e.g. overheating), and so on. There's no quick answer for you here, I'm afraid. My recommendation is to make sure all your drivers are up to date -- video, sound, motherboard, everything -- and check for BIOS updates. If you update them and the problem goes away, then great, but if not, that means you might have to start replacing hardware.

Thanks Lax.

Personally, I'm afraid it's my video card. I'll probably start there if the problem persists.

Interestingly enough, since I've upgraded to WinEQ Pro the problem has decreased dramatically. I don't know, maybe it's just a strange coincidence. Does the Lite version set processor affinity the same as Pro? I had somewhat convinced myself that the problem was related to the dual core bug/crash.

Cheers!

processor affinity yes, processor usage no.

Pro benefits from the full power of EQPN, which limits cpu usage and may theoretically lower heat generated.
