Eq crashing to reboot 1 - 20 mins into gaming session

Post by ausversucht » Fri Jan 19, 2007 11:17 am

Sorry, I meant to post this in this forum, not the lite forum

I am having problems on my home computer playing EQ with wineq. I would like to use 3 characters on my computer, which it is powerful enough to support, however it randomly crashes and reboots the computer after a couple to several minutes of play. I even had it crash once when I had only one account logged in and wasn't doing anything other than sitting at the zone in at the plane of tactics. Usually I'm fighting and suddenly it crashes and poof, 2 dead chars (haven't even been trying the 3rd since this problem started)

This has been a long standing problem for me and was likely part of the reason I left eq before, because I like 2 boxing and even though I have a 2nd computer that will run the game, I can't play as effectively as I can on 1 computer. I hate switching keyboards.

Any help would be appreciated

You are most likely getting a blue screen, but you are unable to see the blue screen report because the computer is set to automatically reboot.

You can change the setting so you can see the actual blue screen by going into the System control panel, under Advanced, Startup and Recovery settings. Uncheck the "Automatically restart" box, and the blue screen will stay visible until you manually restart your computer (note: you can write down the STOP ERROR code, driver, etc for use with google). Modern operating systems, such as Windows XP, prevent applications from being able to cause a blue screen. Normal "User mode" applications such as WinEQ 2 simply dont come into direct contact with the hardware, that's the job of "Kernel mode", such as drivers. An application simply cannot crash a modern OS, and if it can, that's a bug in the OS, a bug in drivers, or hardware failure.

My suggested fixes for this is to reduce the amount of AGP aperture you have set in the bios to 64 or 32 mb and to increase the amount of system ram in the machine (IE buy more ram). While the processor may be fast enough and the video card may be fast enough, you *really* don't have enough ram in the system to run more then 2 characters.

If you look at the "EverQuest" section of the sysinfo, you will notice a line with "Calculated Minimum RAM". For you, based off numbers from 2 years ago, each session takes approximately 500mb of ram because of the options you have set for EQ (newer char models, textures, etc). What's 500mb x2? 1gb . . . what happens to the ram needed for the system or all the other programs you have running (or for that matter, the RAM that the AGP aperture steals).

If you trim back your graphic options for eq, you may be able to continue to run but I can't promise anything.

Reboots 99% of the time are blue screens (BSOD). However, a setting in Windows that says to automatically reboot on critical errors may prevent you from seeing it. The cause of this blue screen is going to be 1 of 3 things:
1. Drivers
2. Hardware failure (Likely overheating)
3. General failure from running out of RAM

From your pasted info, I can see that you have 1GB of RAM. Your settings are cranked way up, showing at least 500MB of RAM used per session. Therefore, you're probably out of physical RAM by the time you get 2 characters in game. Go for 3, and you're storing things on disk instead of in memory, which is some thousands of times slower. With 1GB of RAM and 3 instances of EQ, you're going to be taking performance penalties no matter what. So before anything else, I'm going to guess that you may be running into a BSOD solely from being out of RAM. There is a known BSOD on various systems when you run out of system RAM and video RAM, and DirectX tries to get some more system RAM to use for game textures, which could be the problem you're seeing here. But there's no way for me to verify that.

However, 2 other potentials. As far as drivers, you may have outdated ATI graphics card drivers. You should go to www.ati.com and look for upgraded drivers for your Radeon video card. And of course, there's the potential of overheating. If your system is brand new, this one is less likely, but still possible. You can open up your case and check each of the fans -- CPU and video card are the most important, but there may be other fans on your motherboard for cooling various other chips. If any of those fans are not spinning properly, usually because of dust, then they must be cleaned or possibly replaced.

So first, try downloading drivers, and if you can look inside your computer to make sure the fans are working, that would help you too. If that doesnt help, then your only option may be to purchase a RAM upgrade for your system (I'm not aware of a way to currently drop EQ RAM usage low enough to fit 3 instances of EQ plus Windows in 1GB)

Overheating is unlikely, my computer is in the basement where it reads the case temp at ~65 degrees and the CPU is usually no higher than 90 degrees, at least this time of the year.

RAM may be part of the problem, but if it is, it is more likely due to a defect in the RAM and not due to lack of it (I was trying to run with 2gb of ram with some sticks i had laying around, now I only have the 1gig stick in there that I am reasonably sure is good and is the correct speed for my board)

As for the settings chewing up my RAM, that is a slim possibility, if you look at my original post I stated that I had it drop me to a reboot with only 1 character in game with no other programs running. I wasn't even in combat that time.

I will try a few things, I may try to run my memtest disk for the rest of the day on this stick of RAM in the hopes of possibly identifying the problem. (I have become wary of corsair memory as of late) Maybe if it turns out to be bad, I'll have justification to order 2gigs of crucial memory, I've never had a problem with their memory or their support.

Also forgot to mention, I have the most current drivers for my board as well as the video card.
