EverQuest - 2nd/3rd clients "frezing" often in Win

Post by mrmax1984 » Tue Jun 23, 2009 8:39 am

My setup: 1 normal EQ client, for my main, 2 instances of WinEQ2

In the Windows 7 Beta, I had no problems. Now, in Windows 7 RC, I'm seeing both of my secondary accounts "freezing" momentarily, when switching to them from my main EQ client.

It is quite odd. The screen turns gray, which is Win7's way of telling me that the application is possibly stuck on something, but it then will always pass within a few seconds. This makes it impossible to play though.

Has anyone else experienced this?

In the past, this was due to the CPU being overloaded, or running out of RAM. You can check the Task Manager in the Processes tab, and sort by CPU. Keep an eye on it when switching windows and observe what is using up CPU. If you have multiple cores, be advised that the CPU usage column still adds up to 100%, so on a quad core, a process using 25% would be maxing out one core.

Something you can try to improve overall performance in Windows 7 is disable Aero. See http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows- ... ows-vista/ for instructions on disabling that. Sure, it might not look as pretty, but it helps performance.

I'm running a quad core w/ 8GB of ram, even tried setting each toon's cpu affinity to a separate core without avail.

Also, as far as desktop effects go, the only thing I'm running is the sidebar, which could theoretically be the culprit. I'll experiment with it later, thanks for the suggestion.

Reading another thread about WinEQ2 hooks, I'm thinking that perhaps my new antivirus suite is doing something behind the scenes. I'll try playing with it disabled to see if that's the cause.

I changed the settings for WinEQ2, in that I set it to run in WinXP SP2 compatibility mode. That seems to have solved the issue.

I've just got back into EQ over the last couple of days, and have been having the same problem. I'm running Vista 64 on a quad-core Intel with 4GB. Other than Chrome, EQ and and WinEQ2 were the only thing running, so doubt it was a resource problem.

I swapped the compatibility to Windows XP SP2 about an hour ago, and not had any problems since. Fingers crossed this has fixed the problem. Thanks to mrmax1984 for pointing me to something I would never have thought of trying.

Had this issue on Win7 as well. Changing to XP SP2 compat mode fixed it for me as well. Thanks!
