Consisten Resetdevice failed{} error

Post by Alanray » Thu Jun 05, 2008 4:05 am

Decided to take advantage of Sonys free Legacy offer and returned to Everquest 1 to see if I wanted to renew there. However since trying to resume my old boxing habits I consistently get the above error. Usually it will occur as I load the 2nd instance up but it does at times appear when my first instance approaches the character select screen.

I have updated my Nvidia drivers just earlier as well as Direct X for just in case.

I am really at my wits end and getting to the stage of not even bothering anymore. Thoughts please.

Well, WinEQ shouldn't be affecting this particular issue -- if you get it with WinEQ you should also get it without WinEQ. If you don't, then surely let me know.

Here's a recent newsgroup discussion, which doesn't provide a solution but maybe will help you on your path to getting rid of the message
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.game ... 7961bf71fb

Basically, when EQ sets up its 3D rendering, it initializes a Direct3D9 "device" with certain parameters like the resolution, windowed mode, and so on, so that Direct3D9 knows how it will be expected to perform the rendering. When those parameters need to change (e.g. resolution is changing, or going to full screen mode), the game needs to Reset the device with new parameters. Also, sometimes the 3D device is lost, which can happen for example when your screen saver comes on so your video card doesn't keep doing needless 3D operations, and when that happens, the game must also Reset the device. In this case, the game is resetting the device on its own, and for some reason the Reset is failing. Usually this happens when the new parameters are not compatible with something, like your video card driver doesn't support something. It could also happen if there is not enough physical memory remaining on the video card.

Things to try:
1. Rebooting may help depending on circumstances. From what I've read, there used to be some bug in EQ that would cause video memory to leak or something, and rebooting would relieve the problems for a while.
2. You tried upgrading your driver already, but maybe you need to downgrade it to get rid of this problem. It could be a bug in the current driver, and multi-boxing isn't officially supported by SOE, so this isn't something that would stop them from telling you to update your video driver.
3. Play around with graphics settings in EQ. I see you've already got them turned down a bit, but try messing around with the advanced video options. Try disabling advanced shaders, etc.

Beyond that I would try reading through the suggestions on the EQ tech support forum, which a search for reset device failed turns up 498 messages: http://forums.station.sony.com/eq/searc ... ice+failed

I will read those links then and see if I can glean anything useful. To explain further, I updated my video drivers after that error message started to occur and still it was happening afterwards. I uograded Directx as well after the errors, think it said Directx 10 and what else can I say..

Hmm rebooting does seem to give it a better than average chance of staying up, however once I seem to zone, port etc its adios all over.

I will try dumbing down the video driver and see what happens. My partner seems to think it may be the cpu not handling the work as we both have the same video card and her PC has a dual core cpu whilst mine hasnt yet. Her PC has been able to successfully run 3 clients whilst mine died even trying 2. I have been able to successfully box when I played this 2 years ago with basically the same system so perhaps it is very well software related.

Anyhow, will try and see what occurs..

Just notied the google link, yep I read that one earlier :) but will relook at it from the video driver angle.

Things that I have done so far.

* Eq is set as full screen mode hence Eqclient.ini has WindowedMode=FALSE, as WinEQ 2.15 sets itself as a window mode for me.

* My video settings in the eqclient.ini file reads as below

[VideoMode]
Width=1280
Height=1024
WidthWindowed=800
HeightWindowed=600

FullscreenRefreshRate=60
FullscreenBitsPerPixel=32
WindowedWidth=1280
WindowedHeight=1024
WinEQWidth=1280
WinEQHeight=1024

I am unsure what the lines I bolded above refer to so if anyone knows I would appreciate that.

* In the ingame options for display, I have Allow window resizing as off and the correct video settings (1280x1024 60Hz, 32bit). I notice if I switch to windowed mode I lose the refresh rate option and am unable to enter any values ingame.

* I read one Tech support thread where it said to go ingame to Options and select the Copy Layout, then scrolling to find your settings there and click copy. Well I can't see my settings anywhere next to my character name. I do have three others there 1280x960, 1600x1200, 1024x768 bu no 1280x1024.. So I am unsure how this is meant to fix my problem.

I just tried loading two clients both to the Character select screen. First client arrived at Character select easily, the second one died after I selected the server to go to. Once that died the first one keeled over to. Both had resetdevice error.

Back to the drawing board I think.

I'm experiencing the same exact issue on a machine that I've been using for a couple years now without issue. I took about a 7 week break from EQ due to work and family obligations over April and May this year. During that time there were several patches which I did not apply until the first week of June. Ever since applying the patches I have been unable to start my second instance of EQ2 due to this error.

I did attempt to update drivers in response to the issue, but have not had success.

After reading the supplied links it appeared that the error is happening during a switch from windowed to full screen mode. I dug back into the eqclient.ini files for the profiles and lo and behold the full screen refresh rate was set to 0. I changed it to 60 and the problem seemed to go away!

Hope this fixes it for you!
