Help needed - EQ1 Issues

Post by Umbrae » Tue May 13, 2008 6:59 am

My system is as follows.
Asus Crosshair Mother board, Bios V 904 (I know it is not the latest, but it is the most stable according the asus forums (if you are not running a quad core that is))
AMD Athlon 64 FX-62 Windsor 2.8GHz Dual Core
BFG GeForce 8800GTS 640MB (BFGR88640GTSOCE) Forceware 169.21
4GB (4 x 1GB) mushkin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Gamer (forget the driver, but I checked for new updates for all 3 days ago)
Raid 5 HDD array (about 1 TB available, with 16 GB set as a swap file (I do 3d gfx rendering as a hobby))
Windows XP 64, and Win Vista Ultimate (dual boot)

I quit EQ for a few years and built a new computer after I had stopped playing. I recently dug out my disks, and reinstalled the game.
Now occasionally I get some issues with textures loading odd, such as some ones pants not loading, or similar. Also I commonly get short lockups, 1-2 min. Sometimes complete freezes. I assumed this was due to the dual core bug. one of the reasons I started using wineq2, was because I heard it could change the cpu affinity.
Although win EQ2 has taken my issues in a whole new direction. The texture corruption has gone nuts, a texture or two not loading is normal. Graphics glitches start signaling the coming of a lockup. Player names will get blocks added to them is almost Always first. The all textures go Technicolor. At this point all is responding fine. Since my main is a necro, I can FD and /q (any other class would be screwed) even with the textures all nutty. but within 5-10 min the PC will hard lock or reboot. If I close EQ I open anything else, BF2, Crysis, HL2, Oblivion fine . . . although the gamma is fugged up. I cannot reload EQ normally without a reboot.

I would have though perhaps it was an issue with a funky texture, but a full file scan shows nothing.

This is happing randomly, but the more instances of EQ I run the quicker it tends to happen. running one account I might not see anything more than a few texture bugs, with no issues with a full night of gaming. Other nights with a single account I have to reboot 3-4 times. With multiple accounts I can usually be garanteed with 1-2 hours I will need to reboot. Sometimes only lasting 5 min.

I installed vista on this machine to test EQ (thinking perhaps XP64 was the cultrate) but Vista just screwed EQ to hell instantly. I never got the ground to load (yes the texture for the ground was missing, from PoK, and 2 other zones. . . about half the buildings too, although the doors were always their)

I am going to delete and reinstall EQ today as that is all I can think of. Yet having fallen out of the EQ world for a few years I was wondering if someone else might have some helpful suggestions?

The only odd things I notice is that it list my available texture mem. as 853MB. That seems odd since my vid. card is a 640MB card.
Also, it list my virtual mem. as Virtual Memory: 655/2047MB (which I double checked. my swap file is set at 10GB (I thought I set 16 this time, oh well)).

I assumed this was due to the dual core bug. one of the reasons I started using wineq2, was because I heard it could change the cpu affinity.
I would never classify 1-2 minutes as a "short" lockup. That's indicative of something severe. WinEQ 2 does set the affinity to a single core, as long as you left the option default.
If I close EQ I open anything else, BF2, Crysis, HL2, Oblivion fine . . . although the gamma is fugged up. I cannot reload EQ normally without a reboot.
You can reset the gamma by closing WinEQ assuming you had it running.

It seems odd that you have no problems running other games. If that's truly the case, I would chalk it up to video incompatibility with EQ, and would definitely be asking on the EQ technical forums rather than here (particularly considering you had problems without WinEQ in the first place).
The only odd things I notice is that it list my available texture mem. as 853MB. That seems odd since my vid. card is a 640MB card.

Texture memory is the video card's memory PLUS some shared system RAM as might be assigned in BIOS. Virtual memory, I believe, is on a per application basis (I'd have to look this up to be specific, but I'm just saying this is not out of the ordinary). The page file line above that shows your 14039MB page file.

The only suggestions I have from looking at your sysinfo.txt output is to try disabling various advanced graphics options. e.g. vertex shaders, pixel shaders, even texture caching. If you disable them and nothing changes when you next launch EQ, then you could of course flip them back on.
