Switching between 2 boxes takes about 30 secs in EQ1

Post by Zamkan » Wed Mar 26, 2008 5:16 am

Hi guys, I hope someone can assist me with an issue I have been having. For some reason, when I alt+tab or switch between 2 boxes, it takes about 20-30 seconds to load the game window up.

I am running 1280x1024 rez but with all of the graphic options basically turned off. I have tried removing custom UIs but it still takes forever to not only switch between 2 screens but to even just alt+tab to browser and back.

Any help would be much appreciated please

My system is:
AMD Athlon 3500
2 GB memory
256MB 7600GT

I didn't know the answer to this one until just recently.

I'm going to paste some quotes from an email conversation I had with someone else that had the same problem, but was able to resolve the issue:

Email I received:
I'm hoping you can help as I can't find a similar situation in the forums. The game I play is EverQuest and have WinEQ 2. Problem is, when I go to switch between sessions or switch from a session to another application like Internet Explorer, it takes 5 or 10 seconds to switch and my cursor locks up for part of that time. My old laptop was instant.

Background and What I think may be the problem:
Just bought a new PC. First I copied over my WinEQ files and Everquest files directly from my old laptop. When I ran WinEQ, it said I needed the latest version of Direct X, so I downloaded the March 7 version I believe. EQ still wouldn't run right, so I deleted everthing and did a full install. I fixed EQ as the install said I needed the October version of Direct X also and it updated. I reinstalled WinEQ2 and it still isn't working right. The way it's acting, I'm wondering if loading the earlier version of Direct X over the March version (reverse order) is causing the problem or if WinEQ2 is compatable with the March 7th version yet. Or if there is another earlier Direct X version I need to install also.
My response:
Well, I wish I knew the answer to this as it comes up from time to time on the forums. Usually for me if it takes that long to switch between apps, it's got something to do with CPU being overloaded or lots of hard drive activity. The best thing I can suggest is to check the process list in the windows task manager to see if something's overworking the CPU. I've also had some bad slowness on my laptop caused by Mcafee anti-virus software. Either way, first try shutting down all other running programs, just to see if it has any effect. Beyond that, I'm not sure why you'd have this issue. You could try lowering your EQ graphics settings to be in more of a performance configuration to see if that changes it as well -- though if not and you like the high end graphics, there is of course nothing wrong with turning them back up.

Let me know if this helps =/
And his final response:
You are great!! Thank you very much! I kept going through my windows task manager turning things off until I figured out what was going on. In the end, I had to remove PDVDDXSrv.exe and quickset.exe from my registry file. (and it was only affecting WinEQ and EQ - my other apps switched with no delay.
So my suggestion to you is the same: This is most likely caused by some application running on your system, and by disabling all other applications you should be able to discover the culprit(s)

Thank you my friend and whoever gave you that piece of info. I found that same exact file running too and closed the task and now it alt+tabs instantly. I was worried i'd be having to sit LFG for hours but now I can load my box and play again!
