Problem with new install of WinEQ 2.0 Lite

Post by Golmin » Thu Feb 03, 2005 11:49 am

Just downloaded and installed, registered, and on the first run, received the problem "EQGAME.EXE has encountered a..." typical failure screen for EQ, before it gets too far loaded.

Trying to run EQ without WinEQ up, gives me the same thing. Deleted a couple of files, repatched, same issue.

Also, after installing WinEQ2.0, the load time, etc, went from decent to dog slow.

Here is the sysinfo.txt file

Well.. pretty vague description. I dont know if you're receiving this error before the EULA or after server selection, for example.

However, in all likelihood the error is due to software running on your system that you may or may not know about. You should start by disabling all known software running on your system including virus/spyware protection, firewalls, etc. to determine if one of them is causing the problem. If a legitimate software package is causing issues with WinEQ, let me know and I will try to resolve the problem.

After determining that these are not the problem, you should check for viruses and spyware by using well-known scanning software. Microsoft has a free tool available that is well-regarded for spyware removal, and a tool that can remove several specific viruses. http://www.microsoft.com/athome/securit ... fault.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwa ... fault.mspx

Another thing to make sure of is that you have the latest drivers for your entire system -- video, sound, motherboard, etc.

Lastly, if you are still unable to find the cause, I might recommend reinstallation of Windows so that running software is not an issue. Everyone that was getting crashes of this nature that reinstalled windows reportedly to have stopped getting them.

Finally, I may not recommend using WinEQ on your system at all, let alone EverQuest :) I probably dont have to tell you that your system is quite low-end in today's terms. You may just want to use EQPlayNice to improve your overall system performance while playing, as I don't believe WinEQ will provide you with much benefit with your hardware. You certainly can't run 2 sessions...

Here is the deal:

Crashes between server select and character select.

Have uninstalled WinEQ2.0, have deleted the appropriate portions of EQ and repatched, reloaded Direct X, and reinstalled my drivers for my video card. No programs running that didn't run before.

Additional information of note, I can download the patches to Test server, and comes up fine, redownload the patches to the normal server, fails miserably again, between server and character select.

As a note, this only happened after trying to initially run the program(WinEQ 2.0) in a single window session(wanted to be able to pop in and out easier than could before). Still looking to use it, just trying to figure out what went wrong.

The information in my last post is really the best suggestions I have for you. As described, this goes well beyond DirectX and your video card.

Fixed.

Turns out on digging more, the Registry had been modified somehow, affecting EQ. Went back, to a system restore point from the day before installing WinEQ, worked, reloaded WinEQ, and works fine. Does exactly what I need it to at all the speed I need, which is flip in and out of EQ in windowed mode.

Thanks, Golmin
