Internet Explorer bug

Post by iluminea » Sat Dec 01, 2007 2:32 pm

when I have WinEQ 2 opened, the Internet Explorer doesnt open properly and instead a window saying that IE stopped working appears giving me 2 choices, to reinstall it or to turn off addons.

How to solve that?

Uh.. Well, EQPlayNice works with a global hook, it gets loaded in every process by the system, but it unloads itself from anything that is not EverQuest 1 (this is so it can work on every EQ session, whether you opened it through WinEQ or not). I can't imagine why your IE is having trouble with it, unless some addon or something doesn't like it. I've never heard of anyone having compatibility problems with ANY software from running EQPlayNice (except for MacroQuest 2 in certain cases, or other EQ hacks). I would probably suggest running well-known virus and spyware scans (for some very good free, well-known software for that, see my post at the bottom of this thread for suggestions: http://www.lavishsoft.com/forum/viewtop ... 2887#12887 ), as it could be an internet explorer hijacker causing problems.

The alternative is to disable EQPlayNice, but I don't think you want to do that.

If you are running Vista, run Internet Explorer as admin.

I know it must be something on my side if no one else is having the same problem, but I need help figuring out how to open the internet while on WinEQ2. What I do is open the Explorer before I turn on WinEQ2 then I can surf just right while playing everquest.

I already ran Windows LiveOne, nothing was found. I turned off all addons that was not from Microsoft as well. This is the error details from IE:

Ok. That actually provides enough info to search with on google. The important parts are:

Application Name: iexplore.exe
and..
Fault Module Name: ntdll.dll
Fault Module Version: 6.0.6000.16386
Fault Module Timestamp: 4549bdc9
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 0006164f

The google-able parts are 0006164f ntdll, which turns up 16 relevant results (first page says 279, the other 263 are probably spam sites). One forum poster with this problem had a response from a reader or something saying that they'd heard of something that could be related to a MS fingerprint reader device, and the poster responded with a mention that he had recently installed one. It's a long shot of course but I figure I'd mention it just in case anyway.

A French Microsoft forum mentions going to (in IE) Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced, and clicking on "Reset..." at the bottom. I don't particularly see anything else that will help though.

Typically in situations like this, if that Reset button doesn't help, a program called "HijackThis" is king. http://www.merijn.org/programs.php#hijackthis
Basically you can run the program and either produce a log file you can paste on forums for help (here or elsewhere), or if you are among the more tech savvy you may be able to use the information yourself to remove unwanted things. It checks for malware that uses various exploits to hijack your IE and other parts of your system. I highly recommend using it to see if anything interesting turns up (it also lists a lot of things that DO belong, because it generally makes no distinction -- it is up to the user to determine what belongs and what doesnt, so don't just click everything and remove it either :) )

Really nice program but the last thing I am is savvy tech when it comes to these stuff. I am afraid to delete something that might make my programs not to work later. Can you help me select what should I check

Very interesting. After googling a handful of things I didn't recognize, everything in your log looks legitimate.

The solution may simply be what Skurge suggests. When launching IE, right click the icon and select Run as Administrator, and that might work. The issue could potentially have something to do with permissions. If it doesn't work still, then try closing any and all other applications that are running, in case it's a combination of something else AND WinEQ (EQPlayNice specifically, as explained earlier) that causes the problem. You can also see what happens if you have IE opened already and then launch WinEQ. If that works, you can just leave IE open the whole time as long as you remember to open it before launching WinEQ.

I'm not going to tell you which browser to use if you prefer IE, but I highly recommend using Mozilla Firefox (www.getfirefox.com) instead -- it's free and well-known, and generally regarded as safer to use than IE, which is the biggest target for hackers. And it shouldn't have this crash issue. But that's just a recommendation, what you use is entirely up to you of course.
