EQ2/WinEQ2.0 - can't load patcher? Pls Help.

Post by Crysstal » Mon Dec 27, 2004 5:38 pm

This is the first time I've ever had to post for help, can usually after many hair tearing hours work it out for myself.

This, however, has got me stumped:

Double click on WinEQ icon - cool works fine, downloads latest WinEQ and puts an icon in the tray.

Right Click on the WinEQ icon in the tray and select from the context menu "Default Profile" (or secondary profile) - uh oh - tries to load EQ2 patcher (patcher briefly appears on screen) - ERROR: LaunchPad.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. (1 instance, 2 instances - doesn't matter same outcome).

This has been happening for the last two days - and nothing I can do will let me past this point. I can, get in via EQ2 launcher direct - for two instances though the choppiness and lag makes the second instance unbearable to play.

Prior to this problem the instances were pretty unstable with frequent drops to desktop, game errors, and system reboots. Some of these generated device driver reports to MS (and yep was all VGA related). Have removed drivers using Driver Cleaner 3, have changed Vid cards from nVidia to ATI (and I'll stick with the ATI 9550 which were primarily introduced for OEM - it has major heat issues but is more playable than the "sponsored" nVidia chipsets at the moment). Have reinstalled video drivers and direct X9.0c (which by the way is really only fully supported on the 6800 series nVidia cards - all other cards including all ATI's are better off with 9.0b - shhhhhhhhhh). I've used beta drivers, archived drivers and current drivers.

One thing I did notice that EQ2 launcher is looking for an obsolete API - I know that this isn't a Lavish deal but not sure if it would impact?

Anyone have any idea of what the problem may be and how to "soft fix" this?

If anyone has suggestions as to system tweaks or any other settings that will help optimise what hardware I have please feel free to offer these up -
hardware upgrades however are not an option! Money is too tight to upgrade atm.

Here is info as it stands at the moment: (probably over two posts)

P.S: have restarted WinEq2 and let it repatch - still the same problem - launchPad.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close - can run the launchpad directly just not through WinEQ2.0

Wish I could answer this one. It's most likely caused by software installed on your system, quite possibly but not necessarily spyware. I'll see if i can determine anything based on the sysinfo.txt (note: the dxdiag stuff is generally useless to me)

Okay on the dxdiag wasnt sure if it was of any use (so you got it as a just in case!) :P .

Yeah my first thought was perhaps spy or mal, but I run Adaware regularly - weekly - and ensure the object library is up to date, do pretty regular maintenance like defrags etc. Am firewalled via XP(SP2) and via the router (and everything here is fine).

The launcher will run fine when not through WinEQ2 but wont run at all through WinEQ which is what leads me to conclude that it *may* be something to do with WinEQ. The problem has only occured since 2.06 and hasn't gone away with 2.07.

Hopefully it is a WinEQ issue, because if its an EQ Launcher issue we could be waiting for months for a fix if it comes at all given their other higher priorities atm. I have noticed though that the launcher is looking for an obsolete API so /shrug who knows. Better to start asking questions with someone like yourself who does obviously give a damn than the corporate faceless who could care less!

Thanks Lax :)

See if Inner Space launches it correctly. IS provides the same features as WinEQ, though you might have to dig a little bit to find them. Anyway, whether or not you actually use it, see if it launches.

Sorry for the delay in reply.

Issue was corruption in a few XP files that was only resolved with a clean install of XP.

I think this and a few other issue like the dll unload mem leakage, bad registry writes, and bad heap handles just confused everything. WinEQ + the launcher just didn't want to play ball.

Anyway, it's fixed (corruption was so bad couldn't repair had to completely clean and reinstall). Haven't crashed since - fingers crossed - but am still monitoring.

Ohhhh and am now using IS.

Lax, thanks for pointing me in the direction of IS. Pretty awesome stuff going on there and I'll be having a go with some coding that others might find fun /wiggles her brows!

Thanks again!

Glad to hear it got solved.

I always try not to recommend clean Windows installs, because that tends to piss people off.. but the cold hard truth is it does get rid of corruption, viruses/spyware/other malware, etc., and this specific type of problem is always caused by corrupted data or some software on the machine that interferes.

Anyway, sounds like some fun in store for Inner Space users :) Let me know if there's anything you need. I'm constantly adding new stuff.
