WinEQ was unable to initialize at this time (-12)

Post by NatazzEvoli » Wed Nov 03, 2004 2:55 pm

I downloaded and ran the install tool for WinEQ 2.0. The patch program ran.
I completed the Lavish login.
I changed to eqgame directory to my install path.
Launch Everquest --> wineq 2.0 default profile
yields this error mesasge
"WinEQ was unable to initialize at this time (-12). Please try again later".

I couldn't find anything related to a -12 error so I thought I'd post here and see if there was a quick link around.

Also, I tried running it with and without EQPN by changing the preferences for the profile.

Hello, the problem you are experiencing is due to an older Lavish.dll being loaded. WinEQ 2.0 tries to copy Lavish.dll to your windows directory each time it starts up so that this problem should be avoided, but if that file is in use (perhaps by an older WinEQ 1.38 or EQPlayNice lingering) it doesn't copy over. My suggestion is simply to reboot and try running WinEQ 2.0 again, and the file should copy itself over. Or, copy Lavish.dll from the WinEQ 2.0 folder to the windows folder yourself and it may solve itself (you may get an access denied error if the lavish.dll is in use, that's easily solved by rebooting though.. and then you should just run WinEQ 2.0 and let it do it for you :) ).

I tried two things.

1) uninstalled WinEQ 2.0, rebooted, reinstalled, ran WinEQ 2.0 and watched it patch, changed the eqgame.exe path in the preferences, ran the default profile... and got the same error

2) Deleted the old lavish.dll then copied the lavish.dll from the WinEQ 2.0 folder to my windows folder manually and got the same error. The timestamp on the dll was 10/27.

I made sure there were no traces of WinEQ 1.38 or Eqplaynice left on my pc except for the registry so I don't know where else it could have been trying to read the dll from.

Weird. You may want to have windows do a search for Lavish.dll (Start->Search) and make sure theres not one hiding in the EQ folder or some such. The lavish.dll that comes with WinEQ 2.0 handles error -12 silently

Thanks again Lax. I searched my hard-drive for the Lavish.dll file and found two others aside from the one in the winEQ 2.0 directory. One was in Windows, the other was in My Documents. I deleted both of them, ran WinEQ 2.0 and it went through just fine. I'm very anxious to play around with v2.0 now.

This is probably the best CR out there.
