Pc will restart randomly only after i bring up second window

Post by xryyl » Mon Aug 02, 2004 2:32 am

When I bring up second account the pc will restart randomly usually in about fifteen to 45mins.

Here is the test from wineq.log

This is the only thing from debug file in eq directory on both installations they are identical.

The actual debug file in the EQ directory is "dbg.txt" not "debug.txt" :)

Do you have full graphics settings on?

Thank you for the fast reply.

No I have settings at low with 800X600. I looked in the dbg file before the debug. file the last thing in it was me entering world.

I will post it when i get home, at work atm.

I used to boot both accounts from same hard drive I've now switched to an account on each hard drive, only things I've changed are vid card 6800 128mb and cpu amd 3000 333fsb formated hard drive and installed a fresh copy of winxp pro. I installed all current software from nvidea, via, assus etc.

I've actually lowered my settings i was running the 1024X768 and lowered them to see if that would help.

Oh yeah, if i don't use wineq i can't even get second account to enter world i can select the player but it will freeze up unless i log off other account. These are all new since changing hardware.

Thank you

Memory?

Post by Krehldar » Mon Aug 02, 2004 5:17 pm

Are you sure the memory is good or that the bios has the AGP turned on etc? Almost sounds like a memory problem to me

If it's a new CPU

Post by Krehldar » Mon Aug 02, 2004 5:27 pm

If it's a new cpu then I would be also thinking a CPU problem, gets to hot perhaps, not fully compatible with the existing motherboard, Bios on Motherboard didn't update itself for the new CPU, didn't use the THermal Compound when CPU was installed etc......just a couple of thoughts

Memory sounds like a good guess, it's possible that one chip is good and the other is bad, assuming you have multiple RAM chips.. I would try pulling one out at a time and see if it solves the problem or creates new ones. One of them would crash/reboot even with one EQ running most likely, if it was bad.

I wonder the same about the memory, but wanted to rule out all else before purchasing more. The temps are at 42-46 average 46 being during mid day. Memory worked fine with 4200ti and amd 2.6.

Here is the dbg file anyways.

Symptom changed

Post by xryyl » Tue Aug 03, 2004 12:11 pm

Symptoms have seemed to change. I was not able to distinguish which memory stick is bad, so I guess eithe both are bad/not compatible or good.

The good part is that the pc no longer restarts. Bad part is when i bring up second window of wineq the screen stays blank even though the character is in world. If exit and restart wineq, eq will take forever to reload. Restart the pc and it loads fast. Also this is not wineq this happens if i use eq straight also.

I'm clueless any advice is greatly appreciated

Is this with Win98/ME or Win2k/XP?

98/ME can only handle so much memory without becoming unstable (last I checked, this was actually 384MB of RAM, but some people claim to have 512MB working fine)

Memory Still My Guess......

Post by Krehldar » Tue Aug 03, 2004 5:56 pm

It's still my guess that you have a memory problem, I would suggest going to someplace like download.com or wherever and getting a load tester. A program that will run your memory through the paces, giving loads to all parts of the memory letting you know if it fails in any way. Could be a chip on the memory stick, a particular memory address that is effected so the problem only happens when the load hits that point.

Could possibly be a BIOS or motherboard issue as well, I would check that particularly if the system is brand new (and hopefully still under warranty).. as opposed to having had the motherboard for the last 2 years and you just upgraded memory and video card recently.

That could be too....

Post by Krehldar » Wed Aug 04, 2004 12:04 am

That would be my second guess too :-) maybe check out to see if there are any progs here that could help http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_d ... 541,00.asp haven't checked them out and haven't been actively a tech for 3 years but it's a direction

Once again thank you both for advice. Going to buy another floppy drive just discovered mines broken. That should rule out or solve my memory problem.

i actually had a problem similar to this but i dont doubt that its my memory/video card one bit. it worked fine then i had updated to the latest version of wineq.. and it would reset the pc after i started lloading the second account.... however... i was able to solve it for the time being by going back to version .996 beta of wineq. currently only have 512 ram and my video card is only a 64 meg geforce 2 lol but im broke so i live lol. just thought i would share. and i havent had a floppy drive in 3 years hehe :( so makes that ram checker thing rough.
